The Opportunity:

The Senior Medical Planner will lead the development and coordination of healthcare planning and architectural documentation to ensure design excellence and successful project delivery. This role is pivotal in driving business development, delivering client presentations, and expanding the firm’s healthcare portfolio.

The ideal candidate combines deep expertise in healthcare architecture with strong leadership and client engagement skills. This individual will market and build relationships with healthcare clients, communicate with user groups to understand project requirements, and represent Perkins Eastman as a technical expert in programming, master planning, design, and medical planning.

Primary Responsibilities:

Business Development

  • Actively participate in industry associations to ensure visibility and networking opportunities.
  • Represent the firm in marketing pursuits and assist in proposal development.
  • Support strategic initiatives to expand the firm’s healthcare portfolio.
  • Focus on business development in the NYC region and the Northeast.

Client Engagement & Presentations

  • Facilitate client user group meetings and strategic planning sessions.
  • Conduct schematic and design development presentations for user groups.
  • Communicate planning concepts clearly to clients and internal teams.
  • Assist in developing project scopes and translating planning concepts into actionable designs.

Medical Planning & Design Leadership

  • Lead the healthcare team in NYC and guide medical planning during project execution.
  • Coordinate with the design team to integrate medical planning with overall project design concepts.
  • Direct medical planning documentation through all phases: Planning, SD, DD, and CD.
  • Prepare architectural drawings, documents, elevations, sections, and details.
  • Manage healthcare planning, programming, and medical equipment coordination.
  • Coordinate Department of Health Certificate of Need submissions.
  • Anticipate and develop solutions for technical matters and coordinate with medical equipment vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with life safety codes and FGI design requirements.
  • Stay current with master planning, design practices, and healthcare industry trends and innovations.
  • Provide planning consistently with the firm’s commitment to design quality and schedules.
  • Mentor junior medical planners and less experienced staff members.

Project Management Support

  • Assist with budgets and milestone schedules in coordination with the Project Manager.
  • Ensure timely delivery of planning documents and adherence to project timelines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture required; Architectural License and/or EDAC certification encouraged.
  • 15+ years in architectural planning with a strong focus on healthcare facilities.
  • Proficiency in Revit, Microsoft Office, and AutoCAD,; ability to input planning in Revit and guide junior staff.
  • Lead strategic discussions with clients by articulating emerging trends, innovative thinking, and industry benchmarks; translate organizational goals and hospital strategy into forward-thinking design solutions that support clients through a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.
