About the role

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Associate Principal Scientist to join our Swine Biologicals R&D team located in De Soto, KS.  The successful candidate will be working in a collaborative, dynamic, and multidisciplinary group to develop swine vaccines with the aim of enhancing our robust vaccine pipeline.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage multiple vaccine development projects from proof-of-concept through pre-development and to licensing

  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional project teams and interact with various stakeholders including but not limited to Regulatory Affairs, Marketing, Process Development, Technical Operations, Quality Control, Manufacturing, and Management

  • Manage and mentor a team of laboratory scientists to conduct experiments and animal trials supportive of project development

  • Ensure high-quality and timely data generation, analysis, and reporting to project teams, governance bodies, and regulatory agencies

  • Drive scientific innovation and champion new technologies and methods to enhance functional capabilities and productivity

  • Collaborate extensively across our company's network and with external partners to drive project progression toward key milestones and contribute to business development diligence

  • Support species strategies targeting vaccine-preventable diseases to enable a robust swine vaccine pipeline

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD or equivalent degree from an accredited institution, preferably in Bacteriology or Microbiology. A DVM/VMD degree is a plus.

  • Minimum of (5) years industry or academic research experience in vaccine research and development, preferably with a focus on bacterial vaccine development and/or microbiology

  • Advanced and thorough scientific knowledge of vaccine research and development, disease mechanisms and related preclinical models and methods

  • Expertise in one or more of the following fields: bacteriology, microbiology, virology, immunology, and biotechnology

  • Ability to independently propose, plan and complete research programs

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, including budgets, contracts, and timelines simultaneously

  • Excellent organization and communication skills with a strong growth mindset

  • Demonstrate ability to manage and develop a team effectively

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience working in the area of swine diseases and vaccines research and development

  • Experience in the animal health industry

  • Experience of leading vaccine R&D projects and/or mentoring direct reports.

  • Knowledge of regulatory aspects of biologics: 9CFR, EU Pharmacopeia, GLP, GCP and GMP

  • Project management skills

  • Experience in working with business development to identify and license external technology opportunities

  • Experience in developing and managing collaborations with CRO, vendors, contractors and academic institutions
