Job Summary

The Patient Transporter transports patients to specific areas of the hospital. Relies on establish guidelines to accomplish tasks. Works under close supervision. A vital member of the Surgical Services Department who provides ancillary support to both the professional anesthesia personnel and surgery team.  The attendant will check equipment, order/stock supplies, drugs and equipment to facilitate departmental functions.  

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Special skills: Good verbal communication skills and ability to work with others as a team.

Job Duties

1. Maintain and protect confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care.
2. Identifies the patient verbally and by armband.
3. Provides age appropriate patient care.
4. Assists patients to and from stretchers.
5. Transports patients to holding, and assists with transports to OR and PACU in a safe and timely manner.
6. Assists nursing staff with prepping and positioning.
7. Orients patient and family to the holding room.
8. Able to assess and communicate if a patient is unable to be transported.
9. Utilizes a collaborative interdisciplinary process to provide support to all members in the OR to provide appropriate patient/family education.
10. Reports changes in the patients condition during transportation or before and notifies holding nurse.
11. Performs minor repair on equipment/instrument in accordance to schematic/verbal instructions.
12. Demonstrates a working knowledge of all equipment; maintains equipment in safe and proper working condition through correct use.
13. Performs any of the following tasks utilizing aseptic technique: open sterile supplies, aid in gowning, set up a D&C.
14. Shares the responsibility of general departmental duties with all OR team members, including but not limited to the following: participates in general cleaning maintains par levels of anesthesia supplies and medications cleans and resupplies anesthesia and epidural carts shares responsibility of maintaining appropriate inventory levels and restocking restocks warmer with blankets, irrigation and IV fluids maintains appropriate par levels on non-chargeable stock cart
15. Participates in the orientation of new hires.
16. Serves as a resource for physicians and other departments.
17. Assists with monitoring QI critical indicators and monthly equipment checks.
18. Assists other team members in cleaning and preparing OR between cases in a timely manner and at the end of the schedule.
19. Provides for patients safety by locking bed, raising siderails during transport, protecting IV tubing, keeping OR hallways free from clutter.
20. Observing and reporting malfunctioning OR and anesthesia equipment to Biomedical.

1. Observes and enforces department\hospital policy concerning no smoking, telephone usage, dress code and other rules governing conduct while at work.
2. Appropriately identifies self to others (i.e. patients, patients family, staff, physicians, etc.)
3. Accepts responsibility for action and omissions. Is responsive to identified need for change.
4. Willing to adjust personal schedule to meet hospital staffing needs when requested (including weekends and holidays).
5. Reports to department on time and prepared to begin assigned duties.
6. Provides proper notification and advance notice for absence or tardiness and takes corrective action to prevent recurrences.
