Examples of duties

Promotes a work culture that is focused on safety.

Monitors and logs Department personnel’s compliance with safety training and certification requirements.

Monitors and logs Department personnel’s participation in safety training sessions that are held twice a month.

Stays current with federal and state safety regulations.

Researches safety-related topics, and shares and presents safety-related information to Department personnel for training purposes.

Trains Department personnel on safety-related topics, e.g., CPR, confined space, forklift, and high-lift forklift training.

Inspects Department facilities, identifies potential safety issues for repair, and verifies that repairs addressed the safety issues.

Travels to Department worksites to perform inspections.

Investigates injuries that occur in the workplace, identifies the root causes of those injuries, and responds to requests from Cal/OSHA regarding the injuries.

Performs ergonomic assessments of Department personnel’s workspaces and equipment.

Verifies that Department first aid kits are stocked and current.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY

OPTION A
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree* in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field** -AND- Three (3) years of professional*** level experience in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related program***** at the level of Safety Assistant****.

OPTION B
Five (5) years’ experience at a professional*** level in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related program***** responsibilities in a large****** department at the level of Safety Assistant****. 

OPTION C
One (1) years' experience as head******* of a comprehensive occupational safety and accident prevention program in a department. 

A Master's* degree from an accredited college or university in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene or closely related field** may be substituted for one year of the required experience. 

LICENSE 
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
