Overview

Location: Brooke Army Medical Center

Schedule: Flexible for days, evenings, overnight, and weekends. The Contractor shall be available to provide support Sunday to Saturday from 0001-2400 daily. The Department shall establish a schedule for contract personnel to perform services on various shifts, which range from 8-12 hours. Each shift shall include 30-60 minutes for lunch, which may vary depending on the section and/or specific shift assigned. Duty hours are expected to average 40 hours per week.

Pay: $24/hr + $4.57/hr* for Health & Wellness Pay

Responsibilities

• While on duty, the Contractor personnel shall be neat and clean, free from visible dirt and stains, well groomed, and appropriately dressed. The Contractor personnel’s clothing shall fit correctly to provide a professional, modest appearance, in keeping with normally accepted community standards of dress for the work being performed.
• Facial hair (including beards, mustaches, and sideburns) shall be controlled (restrained) or trimmed. It shall not interfere with safe work practices, look unkempt, or be unclean. Facial hair shall not interfere with the face seal if a tight-fitting respirator (e.g., N95) is required to be worn for normal duties.
• The Contractor personnel shall display legible MTF-provided identification media on his/her outer clothing.
• Practice general hospital safety, infection control, aseptic and sterile techniques for safe handling of sharps, electrical equipment, and blood or blood products, to include cleaning of work areas and equipment.
• Participate in the orientation, training, and evaluation of duty performance of newly assigned personnel phlebotomists ensuring compliance with standards of care and practice.
• Ensure a safe work environment and safe employee work habits.
• Complete applicable documentation to include manual and computer methods.
• Review laboratory request slips for completeness and identify discrepancies.
• Possess/maintain proper certification and skills to perform required duties within regulatory compliance and with minimal oversight.
• Adhere to and maintain a system of supply inventory management with unit supply custodian to ensure adequate stock levels of consumable supplies are available within Laboratory to minimize waste and ensure uninterrupted services.
• Ensure all MTF equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.
• Ensures preventative maintenance and routine cleaning are performed.
• Be productive and perform duties with minimal supervisory direction.
• Contractor personnel shall perform a wide range of procedures involved in the collection of blood with minimal supervision. These procedures involve assembling required equipment, locating an accessible vein, disinfecting the area, performing venipuncture, treating the puncture site, labeling blood containers, and managing patient or donor reactions.
• Greets and interviews patients. Receive and interpret laboratory request slips, review request slips for required information, and determine the fitness of the patient for tests requested by the healthcare provider/physician (i.e., fasting state, liquid intake, medication, dietary instruction). Ensure specimens are collected in the amount and type of specimen required (e.g., with or without a particular anticoagulant) for each laboratory test. Enter laboratory orders into Composite Health Care System (CHCS).
• Perform timed blood collection procedures, such as glucose tolerance tests. Utilizes glucose point of care glucometer which provides immediate glucose results in evaluating the patient’s condition before administering the glucose load.
• Collect blood specimens from ambulatory or bed patients via venipuncture, finger, or infant heel stick, as appropriate, using standardized procedures. For venipuncture specimens, this entails the application of a tourniquet, selection of the proper vein, disinfection of the puncture site, and entering the vein using a sterile blood collection and vacutainer. The blood collection may require the use of a lancet, capillary tube, pipette, or glass slide for blood smears.
• Dress the skin puncture site after blood collection. Carefully observe the patient for any sign or symptoms of physiological reactions after blood collection and take appropriate first aid measures to prevent injury and stabilize the patient.
