About the Opportunity:
Reporting to the Manager of Presenter Programs, the Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting with the strategic development and direction of programs within the department that align with the Academy’s mission and goals. This role involves designing, overseeing, and implementing programs that engage and inspire Academy guests through quality informal science opportunities.

The Assistant Manager will support staffing of programs including supervising, hiring, mentoring, and evaluating staff and/or volunteers. They may oversee the operations of Public Programs spaces such as Wander Woods, the Naturalist Center, and Curiosity Grove, ensuring these spaces are safe and engaging. The Assistant Manager collaborates within Public Programs and Academy Volunteers and across departments to implement strategic priorities and projects. The Assistant Manager manages and incorporates feedback from key stakeholders to shape program design from inception to implementation. This position spends at least one day per week on the public floor interacting with guests and/or volunteers. They are highly skilled at interpreting a wide range of relevant topics for diverse audiences.

The position is full-time and will work evenings and weekends.

This position is based in San Francisco, California. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 2-3 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs. Key Responsibilities:
Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise a team and will assist in the staff management of the team
  • Manage the daily program operations of the team; Develop and implement yearly work plans to meet identified priorities
  • Lead the development of key program components and resources; source and adapt existing resources for accessibility and culturally relevant programming.
  • Collaborate and implement strategic priorities for the Public Programs team
  • Direct and oversee projects related to one’s program/public floor space within the department’s portfolio. 
  • Represent the Academy internally and externally, locally and nationally. May need to travel for business. 
  • Lead the development and socialization of strategic priorities for a program area. 
  • May oversee community partnership and evaluation efforts to augment the museum experience
  • May manage safety, operations and maintenance of Public Programs venues and program budgets. 
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations and complete all HR-assigned trainings
  • Support the Academy’s mission, vision and Academy-wide initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise 1-4 team members providing feedback and opportunities to support their development and growth
  • Provide mentorship to staff and/or volunteers
