Summary
A long-term care infection preventionist (IP) develops, implements, and oversees infection control programs to protect residents and staff. Key duties include surveillance of infections, implementing policies, educating staff on practices like hand hygiene and isolation precautions, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. They also manage antibiotic stewardship, collaborate with other departments, and lead committees focused on quality improvement and infection prevention.

Responsibilities and Duties
- Infection surveillance and data analysis:
- Collect and analyze data on healthcare-associated infections to identify trends and risk factors. Report findings and comply with reporting requirements for facility, state, and federal agencies.
- Policy development and implementation:
- Develop, review, and revise the facility's infection prevention and control program and related policies and procedures annually and as needed.
- Education and training:
- Provide education to staff, residents, and families on infection prevention principles, such as hand hygiene, proper use of equipment, and isolation precautions.
- Auditing and monitoring:
- Conduct regular rounds to assess compliance with infection control practices, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and environmental safety.
- Outbreak management:
- Lead and coordinate the response to outbreaks of infectious diseases within the facility.
