Occupational Summary
Serves as trusts and estates paralegal in the Office of Gift Planning in Duke University Alumni Engagement and Development (AED). This position requires broad general knowledge in the legal field. Trust and Estate Administration paralegal experience is strongly preferred.
Work Performed
- Serves as paralegal managing the estate administration process for donors leaving assets to DU/DUHS upon their death. This position requires broad general knowledge in the legal field and specific knowledge in estate administration.
- Serves as the liaison for DU/DUHS and outside counsel, executors, trustees, personal representatives, retirement plan administrators, and family members.
- This individual must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and understand the need for attention to detail. Familiarity and comfort with database management is essential. A strong personal work ethic, unquestioned personal integrity, and a friendly, helpful demeanor are essential
- This individual serves as the central repository for DU/DUHS’s legal data and materials related to estates, trusts, and retirement plans benefitting the university, a responsibility that requires confidentiality, accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail.
- Completes projects as assigned by The Duke University Offices of Gift Planning within Duke Alumni Engagement & Development and Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs. The position reports to the Senior Director of Trust & Estate Administration. Requires a general knowledge of legal principles pertaining to the subject matter. A specialist in the field of Estate Administration is strongly preferred.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional experience. Requires broad general knowledge in the legal and/or medical field. Preferred Associate Degree in NC Paralegal Studies and broad general knowledge in the legal field.
Experience
Two years working in related field.
