About KIND:
Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied refugee and migrant children. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety. Since 2008, KIND has accepted over 23,000 referrals of children seeking legal representation in their immigration proceedings. KIND has welcomed more than 41,000 attendees to trainings since its founding, cultivating partnerships with over 700 law firms, corporate legal departments, law schools, and bar associations across the country.
KIND’s social services program ensures that migrant and refugee children – who have often endured trauma – receive counseling, educational support, medical care, and other comprehensive services.
To address the root causes of child migration from Central America and strengthen the protection of unaccompanied children, KIND advocates for policy changes and educates lawmakers, the media, and the broader public on the conditions that drive these children to flee their home countries. KIND supports children returning to their home countries by connecting them to essential support services and sponsors gender-based violence prevention programs in Central America to protect children in countries of origin and transit.
KIND is also building upon its expertise in the protection of unaccompanied children to encourage the development of pro bono initiatives across Europe in partnership with European NGOs.
Position Summary:
Building and expanding on work KIND has been doing to improve counter-trafficking responses in Europe for children displaced from Ukraine, KIND is seeking an experienced Project Director to oversee a new 3-year project within the region to build capacity and strengthen systems for children displaced from Ukraine who have been victims of, or are at risk of, conflict related crimes including trafficking in human beings and core international crimes. KIND’s approach leverages our expertise in child migration and culturally responsive legal and social services to protect children displaced by the conflict in Ukraine from trafficking, abuse and other serious harm whilst assisting them to access improved justice as well as access their rights.
KIND seeks a Project Director, Europe to oversee the program design, implementation, and overall performance of this project, managing and coordinating activities across disciplines at KIND, including capacity strengthening and training initiatives in Slovakia, Poland, Czechia and Romania, establishment of hubs in Slovakia, Poland, Czechia, where legal assistance and case management services for children will be provided, and deep collaboration on policy and advocacy activities.
The Project Director, Europe will lead a team of expert consultants to design and deliver a pioneering training curriculum which will first be piloted in Slovakia. Training materials will improve knowledge and skills around trafficking in human beings and the documentation of core international crimes aiming to improve inter-agency cooperation across actors and sectors and ensure that all stakeholders are operating from a child-centered lens and with the same information, resources, and tools (including open-source intelligence tools), for a more systematic and effective effort.
The Project Director, Europe will have experience of counter-trafficking responses for children, inter-agency modalities of working as well as accountability and justice efforts for trafficking in human beings and the documentation and preservation of evidence regarding core international crimes in Europe. The incumbent must be a strategic thinker, able to effectively implement programs across different countries for a global organization. They must have highly developed communication skills to develop and maintain relationships with experts, state agencies including law enforcement and child protection agencies, and international and national NGOS. The Project Director, Europe will engage in the range of administrative and management functions related to people management, budget management, strategic planning, and grant/contract management and reporting.
The Project Director, Europe will join a dynamic and growing staff team based in Europe. Working closely with the Senior Director, Europe and the Vice President of International Programs, the Project Director, Europe will develop, coordinate and oversee this new and innovative 3-year project within Europe.
This position will require the applicant to be based in Slovakia to oversee the development and operation of the pilot training and hub.
This role is contingent on grant funding and will be a fixed term position for 36 months commencing January 2024.
This role is full-time, but we will consider candidates who are available 80% of the time.
Significant travel required within Europe.
