About the role

As our projects continue to grow, we are looking for talented Software Engineers to join our thriving team. You’ll work collaboratively within an Agile delivery methodology, to deliver customer solutions at pace and to high standards.

As the domain responsible for making OS' data products available to the world, the systems we develop - and the technologies used to develop them - are varied. Our delivery teams are responsible for building a wide range of APIs, using a mixture of Java (in particular, the Spring framework), PostgreSQL databases (including PostGIS spatial extensions), and ESRI technologies. Our frontend solutions - including our flagship OS Data Hub - are written in JavaScript React, with Node handling any server-side operations. Our systems are primarily hosted on Microsoft's Azure platform, with Azure DevOps repositories and pipelines used to manage build and deployment. We also interface with API management platforms, credit card payment gateways and multiple internal APIs, to bring our services together and ensure the customer experience is as seamless as possible.

A successful applicant could show strengths in these technologies in a number of ways. Whether traditionally front- or back-end focused, or more full-stack, an experienced DBA, or DevOps engineer, we value strong engineering principles and an ability to work within an Agile framework as highly as proficiency in a given set of programming languages.

We are keen to also invest in you, as such we encourage development and training to allow you to grow within your role. In addition, there are paths for development opportunities within the business as your expertise flourish. Our project teams tend to work together for 12-18 months, before we start to move people around, providing a stable working environment day-to-day, with the option to diversify your skillset as your time at OS progresses.

What we’re looking for

If you’re interested in joining a team that lies at the heart of what OS is about, we’re looking for someone that can demonstrate skills and experience in:

• Experience in one or more of the following: Java (in particular, Spring Framework), JavaScript (in particular, React and Node.js), PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Azure Cloud/Azure DevOps

• Track record in problem resolution, selection of technical solutions and applications

• Experience of providing fully capable software development and configuration in your area of expertise.

• Proven track record of delivering applications into production.

• Knowledge of modern engineering best practice, e.g., version control, CI/CD, automated test

• Proven track record in iterative and incremental development

• Qualified to relevant development certification (or equivalent)

This role will be based at our state-of-the-art Headquarters in Southampton. However, we recognise the need to be flexible. As such we are open to applications that can deliver work remotely where appropriate.
