Job Summary

The Mass General Brigham Medical Group is a system-led operating entity formed by Mass General Brigham to deliver high quality, low cost, innovative community-based ambulatory care. This work stems from Mass General Brigham’s unified system strategy to bring health care closer to patients while lowering total health care costs. The Medical Group provides a wide range of offerings, including primary care, specialty care, behavioral and mental health, and urgent care, both digitally as well as at physical locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. We are seeking a full-time (40-hour) Medical Assistant/Orthopedic Tech to join our team. As true partners to our nurses and providers, our Medical Assistant/Ortho Techs have the opportunity to work autonomously at the top of their education and certification while also contributing as an integral member of a collaborative care team.


While we strive to keep employees in their assigned practice and location, team members may be asked to float to other departments within the WHP system as needed. This may occur during staffing shortages or other extenuating circumstances to ensure appropriate coverage and continued patient support.

Under the supervision, provides specialized support in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of orthopedic conditions. Assists in the application of casts, braces, splints, and other orthopedic devices, and may also assist in surgical procedures.

Essential Functions
-Set up and apply traction in accordance with standard procedures and instructions.
-Assist with the application of casts, braces, and prostheses. Requisition, store, and dispense supplies as directed.
-Inspect and maintain orthopedic equipment.
-Instruct selected patients in cast care, simple exercises, and crutch or cane use. Apply sterile and non-sterile dressings.
-Make splints, slings and foot pieces.
-May make rounds with doctors of all orthopedic patients and carry out instructions.
-Cut and fashion devices from metal, plastic, leather and wood using equipment and hand tools.


 

Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree?
No

Licenses and Credentials
Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] preferred

Orthopaedic Technologist Certification [OTC] - National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists, Inc. preferred

Experience
related patient care experience 2-3 years required experience in orthopedics 0-1 year preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
- Working knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances and proper fitting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology pertaining to orthopedics use.
- Communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
- Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
- Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients

Strongly Preferred

  • Ortho Tech Certification obtained within 1 year of hire
