Job Description:
Calvert County Government's Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a Park Maintenance Specialist II position at Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park. This park is a unique facility that is a collaborative effort between the Parks Division and the Natural Resources Division. This beautiful park features miles of nature trails and multi-purpose athletic fields, offering endless opportunities for community engagement and outdoor activities. This is a Monday through Friday position, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Performs park maintenance, park cleaning, and landscaping activities. Work involves performing general repairs, welding, fabrication, painting and cleaning of County parks and facilities which may involve installation of necessary equipment. Work requires ability to follow instructions and stay abreast of changing regulations. Work is performed under close to general supervision.
Essential Job Functions
Performs ground maintenance to include lawn cutting, trimming, edging, fertilizing and seeding, pruning trees and shrubbery, mulching around trees and bushes.
Welds, fabricates and repairs loaders, tractors, powered sprayers, dethatchers and related equipment.
Performs high frequency playground inspections and repairs.
Operates specialty equipment such as reel mowers, chemical sprayers, and heavy machinery.
Secures sensitive files.
Empties outside trash receptacles and keeps parks clear of debris.
Monitors HVAC systems (mechanical and computerized) as assigned.
Changes light bulbs, repairs pumps, filtration systems.
Completes various painting projects both indoors and outdoors (spackling, sanding, and priming).
Repairs flush valves, plumbing fixtures, roofs, fountains and picnic tables.
Maintains lawn care equipment and other park equipment.
Transfers fixed assets and supplies.
Repairs decks, handrails, fencing systems and athletic fields.
Gives work assignments to community service personnel and other County staff.
May supervise seasonal and hourly employees.
Installs lights and water lines at a variety of County park facilities and oversees contractor installations for more complex or larger projects.
Applies various pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides.
Other Duties
Performs related work as required.

Ability to--
Perform minor repairs and park maintenance.
Perform general painting and park maintenance work.
Proper application of pesticides and fertilizers.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Weld, paint, repair small engines.
Deal effectively with the public.
Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)
Training and/or Education:
Completion of high school.
Experience:
Three years of building and grounds or parks maintenance experience.
Licenses or Certificates:
Valid driver’s license. A current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations may be required.
Valid Class A commercial driver's license and a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations may be required. If so, must be obtained within six months of employment and at employee's expense.
May require ongoing training or certification in OSHA requirements, CPR and first aid, and environmental regulations.
Special Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age.
Operation of County owned vehicle.
May be subject to alcohol and drug testing.
Subject to background investigation.
Physical Demands:
Requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 100 pounds.
Unusual Demands:
Worker is exposed to dirt and soil, and hazards from working with waste material.

Compensation Steps:
Position closing date: April 7, 2025
Pay rate: $24.27 - $26.03 per hour; $44,171 - $47,375 annually
Grade 717, full-time position, 35 hours per week
