The Senior Securities Examiner (“Senior Compliance Examiner”) works as part of the Examinations & Licensing team to ensure that financial firms and professionals serve Maine clients ethically, responsibly, and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The Senior Compliance Examiner serves as a frontline gatekeeper for the regulated industry by reviewing licensing applications and conducting examinations of licensed firms and individuals.

Primary responsibilities include:
- Conducting field and desk examinations of broker-dealers and investment advisers – including review of books and records, internal controls, client files, and correspondence – to ensure compliance with state law, rules and regulations.
- Preparing examination reports with findings and recommendations as well as supporting data, including analysis and preparation of financial statements.
- Testifying at hearings to explain examination findings.
- Reviewing license applications for investment advisers, broker-dealers and representatives, and making licensing recommendations.
- Communicating with securities firms and industry professionals to provide guidance and feedback on examination and licensing deficiencies.
- Recommending new or revised laws, rules, policies and procedures to respond to changes in industry practice and maintain appropriate investor protections.
- Assisting investigative staff with the review and analysis of financial and transactional information as needed to address consumer complaints and support enforcement activities.
Skills or knowledge required:
- Experience, training or education in the securities or other financial services or accounting fields.
- Being able to learn, explain, and apply applicable laws, rules, and policies.
- Analyzing financial records and data.
- Reaching logical conclusions and making sound recommendations.
- Writing clear, effective and precise reports.
- Managing multiple tasks and priorities.
- Leading examinations and other team projects.
Minimum qualifications:
A six (6) year combination of education, training, and/or experience in the securities or other financial services industry, securities or other financial services regulation, finance, law, accounting, or auditing. Preference will be given to applicants with financial examination or securities industry experience.
Preference will be given to those applicants:
- Financial examination or securities industry experience.
- Strong working knowledge of Excel and comfort with Microsoft collaboration tools including Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
