Regional Health & Safety Manager

Location: Candidates must reside in Puerto Rico. This role requires associates to be in-office 3 days per week, fostering collaboration and connectivity, while providing flexibility to support productivity and work-life balance. This approach combines structured office engagement with the autonomy of virtual work, promoting a dynamic and adaptable workplace. This role is going to require frequent travel within MMM Holdings offices and clinics and other Elevance Health sites of the west region of Puerto Rico.

The Regional Health & Safety Manager  will be responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs and procedures for assigned business operations within a region to enhance EHS awareness and drive compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as corporate guidelines and policies. May also manage Workers' Compensation within a region.

How you will make an impact:

  • Addresses safety and health related issues, proactively and preventively, working closely with the Global Security & Safety Leadership Team, providing direction, developing strategies to close identified gaps, and driving continuous EHS improvement.
  • Influences/leads the organization with a strategic forward-thinking mindset on external trends, best practices, and regulatory changes.
  • Provides guidance on common inquiries or complaints, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ensures that all applicable regulatory environmental permits, reports, and plans are generated and updated to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local EPA regulations.
  • Develops and monitors meaningful leading indicators of safety and health risk/performance, analyzes data trends, and provides insights for management reviews, with the aim of continuously improving and enhancing safety performance.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate environmental and sustainability programs in consultation with the facilities team.
  • Conducts hazard and risk assessments and audits.
  • Develops new safety policies and procedures, or recommends amendments where needed, to ensure timely completion of corrective actions that promote continuous improvement.
  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert advisor for contracts with vendors, partners, and customers.
  • Demonstrates and emphasizes safety as a top organizational priority while maintaining a mindset focused on continuous improvement.
  • May oversee all Workers’ Compensation claims for an assigned region, ensuring compliance with regulations; reporting claims to the State Insurance Fund within specified timelines, leading incident investigations in partnership with management, responding to inquiries from the State Insurance Fund, and working with local human resources to ensure adherence to Workers’ Compensation accommodations.
  • Maintains communication with associates, management, and the State Insurance Fund regarding injuries and illnesses related to Workers’ Compensation.
  • Collaborates with the enterprise Workers’ Compensation team to align with incident reporting metrics while keeping accurate and current OSHA recordkeeping documentation and filings.
  • This role provides support across multiple time zones and involves travel within the region.
  • Associates in the role are expected to be fluent in English and Spanish.

Minimum Requirements: Requires a BA/BS in Occupational Environmental, Health, and Safety or related field and a minimum of 8 years of experience in Environment, Health & Safety; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.

Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences:

  • Workers' Compensation experience may be required.
  • Knowledge and/or training specific to EPA and OSHA regulations preferred.
  • Experience in managing OSHS, ISO45001OHSM, ISO 14001 EMS, and other EHS initiatives preferred.
  • Working knowledge and experience with Workers' Compensation and the Puerto Rico State Insurance Fund Corporation is strongly preferred.
  • Fully Bilingual (English and Spanish) in both Written and Verbal proficiency is preferred.
