About the role

Wealth Planning & Advice (WP&A) is a group of experts in trusts & estates, tax planning, financial planning, and planning in related areas for individuals and their entities (operating businesses, private foundations, trusts, etc.). Our role is to work with advisors and their clients to educate them about wealth planning opportunities both simple and complex. We provide intellectual capital to clients across the wealth continuum and will work on-on-one with clients in appropriate circumstances.

 

The Athlete Center of Excellence (ACOE) works collaboratively with field leadership and other specialist teams to provide wealth planning advice specifically to clients and prospective clients who are athletes, ranging from high school and college players monetizing their name, image and likeness (NIL) to professional players in all stages of their careers including former players. The ACOE will work closely with our Athlete Council (a group of retired professional athletes who are passionate about financial education for athletes) to set our strategy for engaging with athletes across all of our businesses.

 

As a Executive Director – Athlete Center of Excellence on the Wealth Planning & Advice Team, you will have a thorough knowledge of planning for individuals, including trusts & estates and individual tax rules (primarily transfer tax, although income tax knowledge is a plus). Familiarity with the taxation of entities and of estates and trusts is also useful. Experience with financial planning concepts and execution is important; including the use of financial planning software.

 

In addition to planning knowledge, we are looking for a candidate who is a former athlete or has deep knowledge of and experience in working with one or more major professional sport leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, MLS). In particular, knowledge of issues relating retirement plans offered to league members, to collective bargaining contracts and rules relating to player unions, and to other benefits that can impact financial and estate planning is critical. 

 

The role requires a comprehensive understanding of team member planning, including trusts & estates and team member tax rules. Knowledge of entity and estate taxation, financial planning concepts, and major professional sport leagues is beneficial. The role involves conveying complex planning details and league rules to clients, advisors, and field leadership in a non-technical manner. The candidate should have a service-oriented and goal-promoting mindset, and be able to identify and capitalize on opportunities to engage with clients using various products and platforms

 

You will partner with J.P. Morgan Wealth Management and field leaders to solidify regional or segment strategies and subsequently advise the field on how to execute on the strategies. You will demonstrate a natural curiosity for people as well as planning and for the wealth management industry overall, must demonstrate independent initiative and must be responsive and be passionate about educating athletes and helping them to achieve their goals of long-term financial independence and will also partner with our Behavioral Science team to help guide athletes and their families. You will engage with our Athlete Council to identify opportunities for client acquisition and service, whether with existing products and services or by suggesting new areas for J.P. Morgan to engage and will be the primary owner of executing on those opportunities. 

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Partner with WP&A leadership and the Athlete Council to develop written and other content (such as video or podcast) specifically geared to athletes
  • Serves as a resource to the JPMWM field in the areas of simple and sophisticated planning for athletes
  • Partner with field leadership and Practice Management to integrate planning concepts for athletes into our standard goals-based advice
  • Provide unbiased comprehensive and customized wealth planning advice to clients and prospective clients
  • Travel to branches and client meetings 
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of both federal and state tax laws relating to our areas of focus and to the rules governing NIL and professional athletes
  • Promote J.P. Morgan’s knowledge and sophistication to outside centers of influence, primarily business managers, agents, accountants and attorneys
  • Work with Advisors to develop business opportunities with prospective and existing clients
  • Be comfortable working with individuals across the entire wealth spectrum and have experience with athletes, with tax and wealth transfer strategies; and with financial planning; experience with investments, banking and lending for athletes is a plus
  • Actively participant in team discussions to proactively propose planning ideas and industry trends that
