Microsoft has an immediate opening for an experienced attorney to join HR Legal’s US Immigration Team. The US Immigration team provides legal and strategic US immigration counsel to HR and Microsoft business groups, drives immigration compliance, and supports the immigration needs of visa-dependent employees and their families.
As a Principal Corporate Counsel, US Immigration you will have the ability to positively impact the lives of Microsoft’s visa-dependent employees in the US, while helping our businesses achieve their most important strategic goals by bringing the best talent to Microsoft. The attorney in this role will drive operational and process excellence to support continued practice evolutions.
This opportunity will allow you to apply creative legal thinking to solve case-specific immigration issues while identifying opportunities to develop small and large-scale programs.
This position is located in Redmond, WA and allows for up to 40% telecommuting.

Responsibilities
- Provides strategic legal advice to visa-dependent employees and business groups on case-specific, complex, immigration matters while overseeing the preparation and filing of non-immigrant and immigrant petitions and applications
- Provides continuous feedback and contributes to the improvement of project operational efficiencies; provides recommendations to improve efficiencies within work group and for the delivery of legal services to clients.
- Project development and implementation while collaborating and partnering effectively across diverse teams in a high volume and fast-paced environment
- Works effectively with colleagues and outside counsel to manage project work and simplify complex legal issues into clear written and verbal communication
- Identifies and anticipates legal risks in the client's business, technology, and/or public policy, and develops solutions to mitigate future risk while remaining compliant with immigration regulations.
- Serve as legal partner to HR and business groups to understand business needs and advise on workforce planning, job changes, and employer obligations.
Qualifications
Required/minimum qualifications
- 5+ years experience as an attorney in business immigration law, including high-volume business immigration practice with technology clients and working on full suite of non-immigrant and immigrant visa processes such as: H-1B, L-1, TN, PERM, and the full suite of EB-1s.
- OR equivalent practice of law.
- Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
- Juris Doctor or international equivalent degree
- OR completion of a legal apprenticeship.
Additional or preferred qualifications
- Experience with development and implementation of complex immigration programs
- 3+ years experience advising on large-scale programs for a global company, including balancing and advising on complex legal and business considerations, ensuring timely completion of deliverable deadlines, while maintaining effective communication with stakeholders
Legal Counsel IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $129,200 - $227,500 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $162,000 - $243,000 per year.
