Job Description Qualifications:

The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) organization, Vertical Lift Division is seeking an Associate or Experienced Mass Properties (Weights) Engineer (Level 2 or 3) to join our Flight Technology team in sunny Mesa, AZ.  Our team creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit.  We provide direct support for the Apache AH-64 helicopter, the Little Bird AH-6 helicopter, and innovative development rotorcraft/fixed-wing programs. The team also supports a large portfolio of products including Commercial Aircraft, Fixed Wing Fighters, Space Exploration Crew Station, and many others across the Boeing Enterprise.   Our mass properties group plays a critical role by leading mass properties weight estimation, measurement, and tracking for Boeing production aircraft and directly supports aircraft modification or design trade studies.

Position Overview:

The ideal candidate will be part of a high-performing team that directly supports the Apache helicopter and AH-6 helicopter production line, specifically responsible for the weighing and center of gravity measurements of production, flight test, and development aircraft prior to test flight and delivery to our customers.  As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work cross-functionally, with design and analysis engineering teams to provide accurate predictions of aircraft and weight components during the design phase to optimize weight control.  This role will include developing and maintaining a mass properties database for all production and development programs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develops current and forecasted weight, balance, and mass properties data for the AH-64 Apache Helicopter and AH-6 (Little bird) Helicopter production programs.

  • Performs estimation, calculation, and of mass, center of gravity, and inertias of components, assemblies and completed vehicles or systems to ensure design requirements are met.

  • Supports the Mass Properties Control and Management Process across the program.

  • Works closely with designers and analysts to understand weight impacts on flight performance to support design or modification decisions.

  • Supports the development and presentation of weight status or technical data to design teams, program leadership, and the customer.

  • Supports the development, population, enhancement and maintenance of the mass properties database including the generation of weight and balance reports delivered to our customers.

  • Reviews and supports detail and installation drawing release processes.

  • Supports the development of center of gravity envelopes to ensure safety of flight requirements are met.

  • Supports main rotor blade balance and trains technicians to balance main rotor blades.

  • Conducts advanced design weight estimation to develop preliminary weight estimates for advanced design proposals, prototyping efforts, and trade studies.

  • Enjoys attention to detail and working across several functions ranging from analysts, designers, pilots, and manufacturing assembly line technicians.

  • Excellent leadership, written/verbal communication skills, and willingness to learn new tools or optimize processes.

  • Familiarity with (or desire to become an expert implementing) Society of Allied Weight Engineering (SAWE) Recommended Practice 7 & 8 or MIL-STD-1374 mass properties weight and control standards.

Work Authorization:

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.  An interim and/or final U.S. confidential clearance Post Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelors of Science degree from a accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry.

  • At least 1 year of experience with 3D solid modeling software applications (e.g. NX, Catia, CADD).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Currently hold an active security clearance.

  • Bachelor’s degree within Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering Discipline desired.

  • Experience with three-dimensional parametric modeling using NX/Teamcenter or CATIA/ENOVIA methods and tools.

  • 2 or more years of experience with fixed-wing and/or rotary wing aircraft platforms.

  • Experience with Society of Allied Weight Engineers (SAWE)
