Sr. Underwriter/Underwriter Specialist/Executive Underwriter - Retail Environmental (Markel-NE)

The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Able to provide coaching to others.

What you'll be doing:

• Successfully grow retail book and business and Markel footprint in the East territory.
• Communicate with environmental product line leaders and direct managers on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate. 
• Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
• Market products and capabilities to producers by coordinating marketing plan with regional and national business development team.
• Due to the large and complex nature of the risks being presented, preference will be given to candidates who have a multi-faceted background including field/consulting in addition to environmental underwriting.

What we're looking for:

• Minimum 5 years of Retail Environmental Underwriting/Insurance experience. 
• Proven, recent expertise in complex environmental underwriting
• Demonstrated technical expertise and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility.
• Four year college degree in environmental or a related science preferred.
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
• PC literate with emphasis on Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Strong analytical and organizational skills
• Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment
• Up to 25% travel

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Sr. Underwriter position is $84k - $114k/year with a 40% bonus potential, Underwriting Specialist position is $105k - $140k/year with a 40% bonus potential and Executive Underwriter is $125k - $160k/year with a 45% bonus potential.
