Job Description:

UToledo Health and the University of Toledo Health and the College of Medicine and Life Sciences invites applications for a Transplant Surgeon; specializing in kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a growing academic transplant program committed to delivering exceptional patient care, advancing clinical innovation, educating future physicians, and expanding access to life-saving transplant services throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive surgical care for patients with end-stage organ disease, participate in the growth and development of the transplant program, and contribute to the institution's missions of clinical excellence, education, research, and community engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Perform kidney, pancreas, and liver transplant procedures, including deceased and living donor transplantation.
  • Evaluate and manage patients throughout the transplant continuum, including pre-transplant evaluation, operative care, and long-term post-transplant follow-up.
  • Participate in organ procurement activities and donor recovery procedures.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient transplant surgical care.
  • Participate in a shared call schedule for transplant surgery.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary transplant teams, including transplant nephrology, hepatology, anesthesia, critical care, infectious disease, pathology, radiology, nursing, pharmacy, nutrition, and social work.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements established by UNOS, OPTN, CMS, and other accrediting organizations.
  • Promote quality improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, outcomes, and operational excellence.

Research Responsibilities:

  • Participate in clinical, translational, and outcomes-based transplant research.
  • Develop scholarly activities leading to peer-reviewed publications and presentations at regional and national meetings.
  • Collaborate with basic science and clinical investigators across the University.
  • Pursue opportunities for grant funding and clinical trials.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of one of the following training pathways:
  • An accredited General Surgery Residency followed by fellowship training in Abdominal Organ Transplant Surgery, with Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Surgery; or
  • An accredited Urology Residency followed by fellowship training in Transplant Urology or Renal Transplantation, with Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Urology.
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Ohio.
  • Eligible for appointment to the medical staff with clinical privileges at UToledo Health.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience performing kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation.
  • Experience with living donor transplantation.
  • Academic appointment or faculty experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to education and mentorship.
  • Strong record of scholarly activity, publications, or clinical research.
  • Leadership experience within a transplant program.
  • Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
