Job Description

AECOM is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our Remediation team in the Buffalo, NY office. The successful candidate will work with a diverse team of technical leaders across a broad range of practice areas delivering professional consulting services to our key clients. This position requires some fieldwork within the northeast United States region.

The successful candidate will join a large established team conducting environmental site assessment and remediation projects across New York and New Jersey. This position requires excellent written and spoken communication skills, organizational and time management skills, flexibility to work on a range of projects, and a positive attitude. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively with members of the project team, clients, site personnel and office management, and have the ability to work both independently and as a part of a project team.

The successful candidate will assume a deputy project manager role within the department and will develop strong relationships with the team, and with clients to enable the pursuit of new opportunities. The successful candidate will be committed to the team’s success and growth; will rigorously apply safety policies and procedures; will manage the technical, cost and schedule elements of project delivery; and will effectively manage the quality of field efforts and project deliverables within the bounds of the AECOM Quality Management System.

The job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Work collaboratively with the NY/NJ Remediation team Project Managers, professionals within the Remediation department, and professionals within other AECOM internal business lines.
  • Function as Project Scientist working on projects with various levels of complexity, responsible for technical delivery, client liaison, reporting requirements, and coordination with project team members. 
  • Act as Deputy Project Manager on large, complex projects assisting Project Managers with technical delivery, schedule management, fiscal management, reporting requirements, client management, and coordination with project team members.
  • Undertake technical work in accordance with the contracted scope of work, budget, schedule and legislative standards.
  • Provide field-based task oversight of environmental investigation and remediation programs. Field work may include soil, sediment, surface water and/or groundwater sampling, operation and maintenance of remedial systems, and remedial construction oversight including subcontractor management.
  • Coordinate and prepare written reports, work plans, and technical memorandums; analyze data and develop supported conclusions.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to increase project efficiencies, improve technical methodologies and add value to client service offerings.
  • Assist with development of junior staff through ongoing mentoring.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA/BS in Environmental Science and 4+ years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Valid U.S Driver's License and as a condition of employment, must pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records Review.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Environmental Science 
  • 6+ years of relevant experience at a consulting firm.
  • Experience as a deputy project manager or technical lead on site characterizations, remedial investigations and/or feasibility studies, is preferred.
  • Experience working on projects subject to NYSDEC regulatory oversight and Superfund programs.
  • Experience applying NYSDEC DER-10 site investigation and remediation requirements.
