Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is currently recruiting for a Full-Time Plumber/HVAC Technician.
You will be responsible for ensuring journeyman level HVAC work is performed with the responsibility of determining the appropriate work methods. Performing assignments independently therefore responsible for planning the assigned work, following sketches, wiring diagrams and blueprints.

Job Duties:

- Responsible for performing skilled maintenance,
installation, and repairs of heating, refrigeration and air
conditioning equipment and related control systems.

- Responsible for performing maintenance and repair duties
required of Zone Mechanics which involves aspects of
carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing to keep assigned
zone in working order.

- Assessing potential problems, hazards and
opportunities to maintain assigned Zone assets to prevent
unplanned impairments.

Minimum Qualifications

- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions necessary to perform assigned job
duties safely and effectively.
- A valid Virginia driver’s license.
- EPA Section 608 Universal certification.
- State of Virginia HVAC or Journeyman license.
- Documented hands-on experience in commercial or industrial HVAC installation, maintenance, and
troubleshooting.

*As an HVAC Trades Technician III, you are on a rotating On Call/Call Back schedule. As a mission critical employee, there is an expectation that you respond to all emergency calls as stated in CSH PPS Policy Letter #2.

Additional Considerations

-Master HVAC license.
-NATE certification.
-Experience with building automation systems and direct digital control (BAS/DDC).
