Position Summary:
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the Oncology Pharmacy Technician Specialist must be able to perform complex compounding of chemotherapeutic agents, refill and load Pyxis, assist in managing Pyxis maintenance, including troubleshooting, and optimization of Pyxis inventory levels, precept Pharmacy Tech Students, participate in applied education of Pharmacy Students, assist in data collection, and policy revisions as necessary, assist with USP 797 and USP 800 compliance including cleaning of sterile compounding rooms, involved in departmental projects such as Pharmacy week, Health Fairs, etc, and perform various clerical duties as assigned.
The Oncology Pharmacy Technician Specialist agrees to support the goals, objectives, and proper function of the department and Tidelands Health in order to provide positive patient outcomes while maintaining patient confidentiality. The Oncology Pharmacy Technician Specialist will comply with the policies, laws, regulations, and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy as well as those of Tidelands Health. He/She will maintain an appropriate level of competency in order to perform the job duties as required by the department, Tidelands Health and any regulatory agencies. The Oncology Pharmacy Technician Specialist will assist Pharmacy Leadership in their duties to maximize the performance of the department and to implement and improve the pharmacy department, the hospital system, and the community at large. Duties delegated by leadership will be accurately and promptly completed.
In addition to the technician specialist’s responsibilities:
- Assists pharmacy leadership in supporting and maintaining goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the pharmacy department in order to provide and contribute to positive patient outcomes while maintaining patient safety and confidentiality.
- Assists in maintaining a current and cost-effective medication and supply inventory through documented oncology initiatives ensuring education and compliance of clinical initiatives. Participates in maintaining and following medication protocols.
- Assists in maintaining the quality assurance programs of the department, inclusive of Joint Commission, Board of Pharmacy, CMS, and other external quality initiatives.
- Flexes schedule and location to other clinics to cover another team member’s PTO if needed.
- Actively participates in ADE/Med Error reporting in VERGE.
- Adheres to USP 797/800 sterile compounding and hazardous medication standards.
- Participates in monthly unit inspections and removal of expired medications.
- Supports the goals, objectives, and processes that come from the Pharmacy shared governance teams
- Works with patient financial liaison and billing & compliance technician to reconcile recovered medications via patient assistance programs.
- Participates with nursing for daily huddles and will address all pharmacy, nursing, and patient issues.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Prior experience in sterile compounding pharmacy or infusion therapy pharmacy required. Prior specific experience with preparation and administration of sterile IV compounds required. Prior experience in oncology specialty infusion therapy preferred.
Education: High School graduate or equivalent with strong math/algebra, reading comprehension, and computer entry skills. Good human relations and oral/written communication skills required. Specialized training in
an accredited pharmacy Technician program is preferred.
Licenses/Certifications: State Certified with LLR/SC Board of Pharmacy and Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician with SC Board of Pharmacy Registration. Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) preferred.
Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work under direct or minimal supervision and handle stress appropriately required.
Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff required. Ability to handle frequent interruptions & adapt to changes in workload and schedule required. Ability to adapt quickly & calmly to changing situations required. Ability to multi-task & problem-solve required. Ability to set priorities, makes decisions, and responds quickly to emergency requests required. Strong Patient/ Customer satisfaction skills required. Good computer skills required.
