About the role

Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at Royal Hobart Hospital is now recruiting Intensive Care Fellows/Senior Registrars and CICM Transitional Fellows, for the 2027 year – 1 February 2027 – 7 February 2028

Applicants must have significant tertiary intensive care experience, including recent experience in Australia or New Zealand. They should have completed or be near to completing the final exam for Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine, or equivalent. They require independent resuscitation, team leadership and communication skills. They will be given opportunity to independently lead ward rounds and guide management, to take referrals, manage patient flow and run the unit with Consultant Specialist oversight, an ideal preparation for future Consultant roles. They will take leadership roles with family meetings and organ donation casework.

NB: These are senior positions in a busy tertiary ICU that include taking first on-call off-site after hours, similar to the Consultants. They are designed for CICM advanced trainees in Intensive Care as pre-consultant roles and may include non-clinical administrative portfolio work. CICM Transitional Fellow is a specific role for final year CICM trainees, with pre-approval from the College for this to be accredited.

Royal Hobart Hospital has Tasmania’s only Tertiary Level 3 ICU and is the major referral centre. We are C24 CICM accredited and admit a broad medical and surgical case mix, which includes Cardiac Surgery, ECMO, Neurosurgery, Major Trauma and all surgical and medical subspecialties.

We run two 12 bed pods with Registrars and SRMO’s working a day-night, shiftwork roster, supervised by Fellows/SRs who are off-site after hours, with Consultant Intensivist support.

We have a robust protected-time teaching program, including simulation, journal club and active bedside teaching during rounds. Our safety and quality systems include monthly mortality and morbidity meetings coordinated by our ICU Fellows. We staff and manage the hospital Medical Emergency Response System, the hospital-wide TPN Service and a 7-day nurse-lead ICU Liaison Service.
