This position provides and supervises security of inmates in the custody of the Richmond County Correctional Institution within the guidelines of Department of Corrections, supervisory instructions, and federal, state, and local laws pertaining to the incarceration of persons. Reports to the Lieutenant or other designated person and works with inmates, co‑workers, employees, law enforcement agencies, corrections facilities, attorneys, the clergy, medical personnel, and the public to provide operational support.
Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards
- Conducts inmate counts and ensures that inmates are conducting themselves accordingly.
- Provides a safe and secure custody of inmates until their release. Exercises security over inmates to prevent escapes.
- Conducts routine cell inspections and strip searches and confiscates contraband
- Supervises inmates during cleaning of living areas and monitors the use of controlled chemicals to meet or exceed state and local guideline.
- Supervises inmate yard activities and church services.
- Ensures inmates received breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- Resolves disputes, arguments, and physical activities between inmates.
- Completes disciplinary and incident reports.
- Transports inmates to and from various appointments.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma, or GED is required
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in public safety, law enforcement, corrections, and/or military field.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of modern corrections practices and procedures.
- Familiarity with Department of Corrections guidelines, federal, state, and local laws pertaining to the incarceration of persons, and departmental rules and regulations.
- Proficiency in observing behavior and responding with accuracy and speed, using self-defense techniques and firearms, and interpersonal relations.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Certification:
- Possess or have the ability to pass P.O.S.T. Certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within one year but may be altered.
Licensing:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.
OTHER:
- This position require staff call up in an emergency situation.
- Less than 50% of this position requires travel from office to other locations

- Verbal: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
- Math: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
