Part-time Instructor: Surgical Technology

 

Job Description:

Part-time instructor positions (as defined by State Board Policy, BP 3-10) exist to create and maintain a teaching and learning environment that empowers students to be successful. Part-time instructors work under the direction of their respective Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Division Dean. 

Pikes Peak State College maintains a pool of qualified part-time instructors. Part-time instructors will be selected to support departmental requirements. Part-time instructors may be employed to teach courses, conduct presentations or other service activities when current instructors and faculty are not available.

Surgical technology instructors teach students the duties and responsibilities of functioning as a surgical technologist in a hospital or surgery center. The instructor will teach students how to prepare an operating room, provide pre-operative patient care, and assist a surgeon during surgery or another medical procedure or operation. Instruction takes place both in a classroom and in a clinical setting to give students the first-hand experience they need to learn the skills and expectations of being a surgical technologist.

This position requires proof of current Certified Surgical Technologist from NBSTSA.  Must maintain technical knowledge in the field through active participation in professional development organizations and events throughout the year.

Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment.  All work must be performed in the State of Colorado.

Applicants must have availability to teach evening and weekend courses.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completed Associate Degree in Surgical Technology.
• Graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency (CAAHEP).
• Possess a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
• Two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
• Documented experience in three or more surgical specialties.
• Must be effective in teaching and knowledgeable in the subject matter as documented by appropriate professional credential(s)/certification(s), education, and experience in the designated content area.
• Current CPR for providers from the American Heart Association.
• Ability to demonstrate or articulate a commitment to serving underrepresented populations or populations affected by societal inequities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completed Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Surgical Technology or closely related field.
• Community college teaching experience or hospital teaching experience.
• Experience in program assessment.
• Experience with program accreditation.
• Work experience with inter-professional education.
• Curriculum development experience.
• Classroom leadership.
• Demonstrated intercultural competence.
• Experience with Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word.
• Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college.

Salary:

$67.58 per contact hour.  Pikes Peak State College participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA) contribution rates.
