REPORTS TO: Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager
SCHEDULE: Flexible Hours Available, One Weekend Day Required
LOCATION: Venice, CA
STATUS: Part-Time, 20 hrs/wk, Non-Exempt

SALARY RANGE: $20.00 - $24.00/hr

Safe Place for Youth (SPY) is the leading service provider for youth experiencing or at-risk of homelessness in West Los Angeles. Founded in 2011, our agency offers trauma-informed, low barrier programs that support young people in exiting the streets and achieving stability so that they can thrive, not just survive. ABOUT THE ROLE:
Are you a person who wants to make a direct impact on young people experiencing homelessness? Do you believe that access to food and a welcoming community can change lives? SPY is looking for our next Meals Coordinator, someone who communicates with clarity and compassion, and who feels comfortable working with volunteers, clients, and partners from a wide range of backgrounds. In this role, you will ensure that young people experiencing homelessness have consistent access to nutritious meals and a sense of community and care. You will be responsible for coordinating daily meal service, managing food inventory, and supporting volunteers so they feel prepared, appreciated, and engaged. You will also build and maintain partnerships with local businesses, food providers, and community organizations. Experience working with transitional-aged youth is a plus, especially if you bring empathy, patience, and a strong commitment to equity and inclusion.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Be a champion of our food access program by streamlining kitchen operations, coordinating fresh, reliable meal service that meets the needs of our youth, and leading creative efforts to expand meal options.
- Ensure that the Kitchen and meal area is clean and prepared before volunteers arrive, and cleaned up at the end of the day.
- Serve meals to SPY members at the Drop In Center.
- Order catering for meals program as needed.
- Check inventory in the kitchen and order items that need to be purchased.
- Expand our meals program by researching new, affordable meal options and solicit donations for our meals program
- Work with the local food bank to ensure housing sites and the Drop In Center are receiving food bank products.
- Update budget tracker and uploading receipts from purchases.
- Other duties as assigned to support the mission of the program and organization.
Requirements
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- 1-2 years of experience working or volunteering in nonprofits, ideally in food services or related programs is preferred.
- Organization skills is preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace is preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and schedules effectively to ensure smooth operations.
- Excellent organizational and administrative abilities with keen attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- A healthy balance of working independently and collaborating as part of a team.
- Strong integrity and a commitment to professional excellence.
- Interest in food security is a plus
- Knowledge of cleanliness standards and food safety best practices to maintain a safe meal environment is a plus.
- Knowledge or understanding of the homeless youth services landscape in Los Angeles is a plus.
