JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking dedicated Writing Mentors to support undergraduate students enrolled in a Writing Intensive (WI) designated course. Mentors will play an integral role in the course, providing academic support during class time and offering supplemental instruction outside of class. Mentors will work closely with the course instructor throughout the semester to enhance the classroom experience and provide targeted writing support. This role offers valuable experience for those interested in education, writing instruction, and academic support. Mentors will receive training and ongoing professional development to ensure effective support for students.

This is a part-time position with a weekly commitment of 10-20 hours, plus paid training.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

  • Attend all class meetings for your assigned section(s)
  • Offer regular one-on-one and group instructional support both inside and outside of class
  • Facilitate peer review sessions
  • Attend regular mentor meetings

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate/graduate student at CSUSB
  • Must maintain academic eligibility throughout employment period (3.0 GPA or higher)
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with faculty, staff and other students

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Satisfactory completion of first-year writing at CSUSB or its equivalent at another institution 
  • Satisfactory completion of at least one WI designated course in your major, preferably at the upper division level
  • Strong writing and communication skills 
  • Commitment to supporting diverse learners  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in peer tutoring or mentoring is preferred

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
