Department: Product Development

About the Role

The Senior Manager, Data Engineering will be an important contributor in pushing forward the implementation of the company vision into a releasable and valuable product. You will help ensure that the team’s technical direction is properly aligned with the department and company’s architectural direction. • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of highly skilled data engineers, fostering technical excellence and career development.
  • Manage team performance from both a technical and personnel perspective, supporting each team member's individual goals and growth.
  • Own on-call rotation structure and reduce operational toil through automation and self-service tooling.

Technical Strategy & Architecture

  • Design and implement data architecture and infrastructure that aligns with business objectives, including the team's work on a secure, interoperable platform leveraged across all Unite Us products.
  • Drive the design, performance, and cost-efficiency of the data lakehouse, data modeling standards, access controls, and query optimization.
  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices: code review standards, testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and incident response for data pipelines.
  • Champion strong documentation practices — runbooks, architecture decision records, and onboarding guides.

Roadmap & Execution

  • Own creation and execution of the team's roadmap, defining priorities, sequencing initiatives, and aligning timelines with business goals.
  • Manage team capacity planning, sprint/project planning, and roadmap prioritization in collaboration with stakeholders.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Application Engineers, Product Managers, and other engineering teams to translate data needs and business requirements into scalable pipeline designs and platform extensions.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to translate high-level initiatives into actionable team goals, advocate for necessary resources, and report on key performance indicators.
  • Disseminate clear goals, context, and vision across the team and with cross-functional partners.

Hiring & Talent

  • Participate in hiring: define role requirements, conduct interviews, and build a strong bench of talent.

You’re a great fit for this role if:

  • At least 7+ years of experience with a track record of building and scaling high-performing engineering teams and delivering high-quality software solutions.
  • At least 3+ years of direct management experience with product-focused engineering teams.
  • Experience with cross-functional collaboration, data-driven performance tracking, and direct customer or stakeholder engagement.
  • Proven experience owning production data pipelines at scale, ideally with Apache Airflow (DAG design, scheduling, backfills, sensor/operator patterns)
  • Deep hands-on experience with Snowflake or a comparable cloud data warehouse (Redshift, BigQuery), including performance tuning, cost management, and  analytic layers
  • Strong SQL and at least one scripting language (Python preferred) for pipeline development
  • Experience with modern data stack tooling (dbt, Fivetran/Airbyte, Kafka, or similar) is a plus
  • Experience with data governance, lineage, or data quality frameworks
  • Experience operating in a regulated or compliance-sensitive data environment
  • BS/BA degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
