Job Overview
The Head of Operations & Patient Experience will oversee special projects and program development for the Ruesch Center for the cure of Gastrointestinal Cancer; and contribute to financial management and strategic initiatives that advance the mission of the Ruesch Center for the Cure of Gastrointestinal Cancers. This role combines operational leadership, project management, and stakeholder engagement — working with patients, clinicians, industry, and community partners — to support the Center’s growth, visibility, and impact.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Lead project management and operational support for current and future Ruesch initiatives.
Manage and expand key programs such as the Early-Onset (EO) Clinic and Peer Mentor Program
Support the team through data-driven approaches, project tracking, and strategic prioritization.
Strengthen partnerships with patients, clinicians, industry, and community partners to expand collaboration opportunities.
Contribute to grant writing, fundraising, and storytelling efforts to increase Ruesch’s visibility and funding potential.
Support the oversight and management of the Ruesch budget, ensuring reconciliation and efficiency.
Represent the Ruesch Center at Lombardi Cancer Center, within MedStar, and in community outreach settings.
Work Interactions
The role will lead project and program management for the Ruesch Center, overseeing planning and execution of high‑impact initiatives including the Ruesch Symposium, Patient Summit, annual golf event, ASCO exhibits, monthly clinic tabling, and GI Advocacy Awareness activities. The position supervises Ruesch interns and coordinators, drives promotional storytelling and outreach in partnership with leadership, and uses structured tools and tracking systems to ensure on‑time, on‑budget delivery. The role cultivates relationships across MedStar and Georgetown administrators, research teams, and clinical providers, partners with internal and external stakeholders to access and analyze GI cancer patient data, supports budget reconciliation and efficiency, and works with the Science Director and Advancement to identify and secure grant and industry funding.
Reporting to senior Ruesch leadership and collaborating closely with the Science Director, Deputy Director, and Advancement, this position functions as the Center’s operational and strategic hub, translating scientific priorities and patient needs into coordinated events, communications, and funding strategies. The role directly influences clinicians, researchers, administrators, and fundraising staff by providing data‑driven outreach, shaping grant narratives, coordinating cross‑departmental activities, and supervising day‑to‑day program staff; it amplifies clinician and researcher impact through visibility and partnership building, aligns institutional resources to avoid duplication, and represents the Ruesch Center to external organizations to advance shared goals.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social work, public health, non-profit or a related field preferred.
At least 5 years of professional experience in project management, program development, or related operational roles, preferably within healthcare or non-profit sectors.
Demonstrated expertise in stakeholder engagement and partnership building across clinical, industry, and community settings.
Experience of engaging patients with empathy and compassion, enabling connection with diverse patient groups, understanding their perspectives, and providing support.
Experience of managing staff and providing supervision and performance management.
Strong analytical skills with experience in data capture, outcome evaluation, and performance reporting.
Track record of successful grant writing, fundraising support, or development of promotional materials.
