About Economic Studies: The Economic Studies program analyzes current and emerging economic issues facing the United States and the world and, based on that research, provides innovative, practical policy recommendations. ES’s work covers a broad array of economic issues, including economic growth, economic opportunity and mobility, the labor market, regulation, health policy, the environment, tax policy, retirement policy, and fiscal and monetary policy. Economic Studies scholars influence key economic policies by conducting rigorous and relevant research and then disseminating and communicating their findings to the policy community and to the broader public.

Position Location: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.  

Responsibilities

The Director of The Hamilton Project is a fellow or senior fellow within the Economic Studies (ES) Program who is responsible for the full scope of center operations including developing the Center’s strategy and research/policy agenda, ensuring the Center is on sound financial footing, and managing and supporting the performance of Center staff.

 

As a scholar, Directors conduct independent research on policy-oriented topics of their own choosing that support the Economic Studies mission. In addition to independent research, Directors seek opportunities to collaborate with scholars in ES, across the Institution, and externally. Directors achieve impact by leading the Center research/policy agenda, sharing their work with policymakers and other stakeholders, presenting their research at academic conferences, and utilizing traditional and social media.

 

Directors provide key input to the Research Vice President of the ES program to support overall Program operations. They regularly partner with the ES Management Team (HR, Finance, Development, Communications Leads) on program operations to ensure effective operations and alignment with Brookings’ policies. Directors ensure that Center staffing is appropriate to achieve goals and aligned with funding streams, while providing leadership to junior staff that support the Center’s work.

 

Directors have a key role in partnering with development and finance staff to build and steward funding for the Center’s work with communications staff to effectively promote and disseminate it. Directors also engage in activities that support a scholarly community including attending and presenting at seminars, engaging in recruitment activities, and supporting other program goals.

 

In all their work, Directors are expected to perform and conduct Center operations in a way that supports a welcoming and inclusive community while upholding Brookings’ standards of quality and independence
