ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc. and will be assigned to the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the EDLB.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Database Manager will provide database management and bioinformatic support for the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch o provide bioinformatic and database management support services to support outbreak detection and surveillance for foodborne illness; maintain current system (PulseNet 1.0) and make necessary software upgrades and support the development and implementation of new system.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains existing PulseNet system and make needed upgrades to ensure software functions optimally until the end of life.
- Performs routine outbreak response and surveillance activities for foodborne illness under existing system;
- Conducts needs assessment to evaluate current system and needed optimizations for PulseNet Modernization project;
- Assists with development, validation, and implementation of new scripts and bioinformatic workflows (metagenomics) to support PulseNet Modernization system.
- Assists with the development of training, standard operation procedures, and additional resources for use of the PulseNet Modernization system.
- Assists with the onboarding and transitioning of PulseNet members onto new PulseNet Modernization system.
- Troubleshoots current and new system and provide user support;
- Develops certification and proficiency testing process for PulseNet Modernization system.
- Fulfills mandatory BioSafety and IT security training requirements.
- Travels to provide training to enhance the capacity of the local/international public health sector; provide outbreak response efforts during national and international foodborne disease outbreaks; present findings at scientific meetings.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in information technology, bioinformatics, allied health, health science, or life sciences.
- At least 3 years work experience in health informatics.
- At least 2 years work experience in cloud implementation.
- At least 2 years technical project management experience.
Required:
- Strong quantitative skills, including proficiency in R; relational database management systems; and standard Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Communication skills, including experience developing communication tools such as scientific manuscripts, presentations, and posters.
- Excellent skills for preparing written documents and giving oral presentations.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to comfortably multi-task.
- At least 1-2 years of prior experience in applying machine learning algorithms in the area of large-scale genomic problems, bacterial or human.
- Strong demonstrable experience in programming languages and software packages; able to develop novel bioinformatics pipeline, distributable packages and modules.
- Ability to configure and maintain a Unix/Linux bioinformatics computing environment.

Language Skills:
- The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
