Director, Product Management
General Summary
The Director of Product Management will define and standardize the best practices and methodologies for product management, assess and actively coach product managers toward excellence, setting and monitoring team objectives, and broad, frequent, cross-functional communication and collaboration. This will be accomplished by directly leading the product management of an enterprise application software solution, while coaching other efforts across the product portfolio. The Director is ultimately responsible for the definition of a viable product portfolio and of valuable new products.
The Director of Product Management must be able to join a dynamic and fast-paced environment, working with cross-functional teams to design, build, and roll-out products that deliver the company’s vision and strategy; both at the individual contributor, and director-level. All product managers should be well versed in product management disciplines and methods, customer-centered design thinking, value creation through solving unmet needs, economics and business cases for product viability, organizational alignment around product goals, and exceptional communication, visibility, and cross-functional collaboration.
Ramping up for success
Within your first 30 days, you will have a full understanding of existing development initiatives, team skills & gaps, and a defined plan for implementing best practices. Start modeling best practices, especially for communication of priorities and rationale on a critical, application software solution. Present plan to senior leadership.
Within your first 60 days, you will have a full understanding of our market and customer challenges, and begin implementation of best practices for quantifying, evaluating, and communicating development options beyond the application software product.
Within your first 90 days, the team will be consistently executing best practices and methods.
Primary Responsibilities
This is a leadership and management role, which is responsible for all activities of the product management department
- Standardize methods and best practices for product management, evangelize them, and make them effective in execution throughout product life cycle
- Active coaching of the team to build skills and promote visibility
- Perpetually communicate strategy, decisions, roadmap, business cases, status, rationale, methods, progress, risks, value, etc. to many audiences, including C-suite executives, customers, peers, and employees
- Set and manage team objectives
- Work cross-functionally all the time and ensure alignment
- Execute staffing of exceptional talent as needed
- Contribute to the product vision, strategy, and principles
- Be deeply knowledgeable about our customers, market, and industry, and become an expert on unmet needs and pervasive market problems
- Understand our business, what creates value, what product offerings are economically viable, define monetization strategies, and articulate commercial cases for decisions
- Understand quantitatively and qualitatively how customers use our products
- Represent the company by visiting customers to communicate our vision, understand their requirements, and solicit feedback on company products and services
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent
- MBA or commensurate business experience
- Demonstrated ability to figure out solutions to hard problems with many constraints, using sound judgment to assess risks, and to lay out your argument in a well-structured, data-informed, written narrative.
