The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

 

The AUKUS SSNA Program is seeking a strong engineer to support the development of the next generation of fast attack submarines.   This position will be responsible for working collaboratively with other key stakeholders throughout the SSNA program and will interface with UK’s BAE Systems integrated delivery teams (IDTs) to help design portions of the UK and Australian SSNA nuclear-powered submarine.  

 

The engineer will need to:
    · Engage with shipyards, customers and other stakeholders to collect feedback for design incorporation. 
    · Have flexibility with work assignments and may perform duties outside of traditional discipline work scope.
    · Work with multi-discipline teams on incorporation of SSNA design principles
    · Solve complex spatial integration issues while meeting system and overall ship requirements
    · Be able to effectively communicate with both internal leadership and external customer(s).
    · Be prepared to work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. 
    · The position will requires individuals who are able to adapt and adjust to support objectives.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

  • Strong technical background and knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from the concept stage through ship integration.
  • Team facilitator and innovator, helping to develop and inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to NNS leadership or the Navy, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners.
  • Knowledge of submarine mechanical systems and how they interface with structural, electrical, and other mechanical systems.
  • An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages/cam-sliders, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, welded or fastened joints, and others.
  • Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components.
  • The ability to work in and foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders.
  • Exhibit a desire for continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment.
  • Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus.
