DEPARTMENT SCOPE OF SERVICE:

Under the direction of the RN Team Lead or Clinical Nurse Administrator (CNA) the Patient Safety Technician-Float works as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team providing efficient and appropriate assistance with select patient and unit needs. The PST - FLOAT will also perform a variety of clerical duties and various tasks to provide a well-supplied, safe and clean patient unit.

The PST - FLOAT will also perform a variety of clerical duties and various tasks to provide a well-supplied, safe and clean patient unit.
  • Under the direction of the RN Team Lead or Clinical Nurse Administrator (CNA) the Patient Safety Technician-Float works as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team providing efficient and appropriate assistance with select patient and unit needs. The PST - FLOAT will also perform a variety of clerical duties and various tasks to provide a well-supplied, safe and clean patient unit.
  • Immediately reports any observed changes in the patient’s behavior or condition to the primary nurse. Informs the RN/LPN of any patient complaints related to their health.
  • Calls the appropriate emergency code if needed.
  • Performs patient assistance activities as related to ambulation and mobilization safely, including, but not limited to, assisting patients out of and returning to their bed/chair primarily for bathroom needs (if monitoring only one patient).
  • Regularly conducts room safety sweeps and ensures that potentially hazardous items are removed whenever possible.
  • Monitors applied restraints to ensure patient safety and comfort.
  • Assists staff in the dressing and undressing the patient as needed and securing clothes and belongings as per company standard to ensure the patient’s safety.
  • Assists with delivery of meal trays and setup.
  • Maintains a professional and safe appearance, to include not wearing any items around the neck that could be used as a weapon.
  • Documents all observations including restraints in the medical record as instructed and within designated timeframes.
  • Always ensures patient confidentiality, and refrains from discussing patient information with anyone other than the assigned nurse and physician.
  • Communicates in a professional and empathetic manner with the patient at all times, by listening and acknowledging patient’s complaints and refers such complaints to the nurse.
  • Will not bring personal items such as phones, food, books, or magazines into the room.
  • Maintains infection prevention standards during all activities.
  • Maintains personal and professional boundaries at all times, including refraining from sharing personal information.
  • Answers call lights and secures appropriate resources to address patient need.
  • Performs hourly rounding for patient experience and safety checks per unit standard.
  • Stocks equipment and supplies, monitoring for expired items.
  • Transports patients within the hospital as needed.
  • Answers telephones and completes other clerical duties as assigned.
  • Assists with maintenance of overall unit organization and cleanliness.

Requirements

EDUCATION:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE/SKILL SETS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced work environment with excellent organizational, customer service and prioritization skills required.
  • Prior healthcare experience preferred. 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION(S):

  • CPR within 3 months of hire.

OSHA CATEGORY:

OSHA Category I: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues require use of techniques of Universal Precautions as evidenced with blood borne pathogens standards.
