Description
The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of Fire Prevention is seeking a Deputy State Fire Marshal I to join the General Inspection Section.

This position plays a critical role in protecting Kentucky communities by conducting fire and life safety inspections of public buildings, investigating code-related complaints, and working with property owners and occupants to ensure compliance with applicable safety standards. These inspections help ensure that means of egress, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and other required safety features are maintained in satisfactory condition.

The Division of Fire Prevention currently utilizes the 2012 NFPA 1 (National Fire Protection Association) "Fire Prevention Code," as well as the 2012 NFPA 101 "Life Safety Code" when inspecting existing buildings. As a Deputy State Fire Marshal I, you will perform inspections to ensure compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes and conduct follow-up activities as needed.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Performs inspections of public buildings to minimize fire loss in accordance with KRS Chapter 227 and 815 KAR 10:060 (Kentucky Standards of Safety).
  • Maintains an accurate record of inspections at facilities including any deficiencies noted during an inspection.
  • Conducts follow up inspections to ensure that appropriate corrections have been made.
  • Investigates code related complaints from the public on facilities and determines if the complaint is valid.
  • If valid, write up the appropriate deficiency and send it to the building owner.
  • Conducts a follow-up inspection to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
  • Assist local jurisdictions and fire departments by answering code related questions, assisting in inspections, and performing fire prevention campaigns.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of experience in mechanical trades installation or inspection; or two years in skilled building trades; OR one year as a fire prevention inspector in a fire department; OR one year as an inspector with the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction; OR one year of experience performing fire/life safety inspections with a private industry or other government agency; OR must have three years as a Fire Chief or a similar administrative position in a fire department.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: An associate's degree in fire science technology, architecture, engineering or related fields will substitute for the two years of experie
