About the role

The Pharmacy Manager oversees the day to day operations of the various pharmacy areas pursuant to the distribution, administration and drug information of medication provided throughout the hospital. This individual ensures the utilization of medication safety principles to assure positive therapeutic outcomes

A. Clinical/Technical/Service

Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks:

1. Develops and implements pharmacy patient care services.

2. Integrates the clinical and distributive activities of the pharmacy.

3. Practices within a specified area of specialty.

4. Develops and implements the hospital’s medication use evaluation program.

5. Completes all required documentation, including staff attendance and performance records and annual

performance appraisals.

6. Maintains the accuracy of pharmacy records.

7. Insures that all records maintained in compliance with Federal, State, Local and institutional regulations.

8. Maintains department security.

9. Insures the accuracy of work by insuring that only adequately trained and supervised employees are

responsible for the process and that all necessary checks are in place and carried out.

10. Works closely with local clinic leadership and department leadership to ensure open communication and

operational efficiencies for the best patient care, patient experience, and clinical outcomes as well as

overall profitability.

11. Coordinates Pharmacy and Therapeutics activities, including preparing drug monographs for formulary

requests and publishing regular communication to the medical staff.

12. Develops and conducts new employee orientation program, ongoing education, training and development

programs and hospital-wide pharmacy related inservice education.

13. Coordinates research and investigational drug activities.

14. Directs the provision of drug information services to the pharmacy and clinic staff.

15. Participates in multi-disciplinary patient care activities.

16. Ensures an adequate inventory of medications and supplies is maintained. Arranges for emergency inter-

hospital transfer of medications when required.

17. Ensures adequate and appropriate staffing at all times.

18. Serves as preceptor to pharmacy students.

19. Contributes to departmental cost-containment and profitability.

20. Maintains a safe, clean working environment.

21. Maintains inventory and inventory controls and inventory records

22. Manages the adjudication of prescriptions including oversight of payments, co-pays, coupons and

ensures adequate controls

23. Manages the business and contractual relationship with payers, PBMs, and processors

24. Maintains and enforces appropriate security measures at all times.

25. Prepares required reports of pharmaceutical services and all business reports.

26. Performs all duties associated with the Registered Pharmacist position when required.

27. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial,

educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

 

B. Organizational/Managerial

1. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities.

2. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.

3. Observes the Health Care System’s compliance policies.

4. Acts as the Director’s agent in his/her absence, e.g., evenings, nights and weekends.

5. Exercises sound judgment, recognizes and attends to priorities.

6. Responds appropriately to supervision provided by Pharmacy Directors.

7. Demonstrates understanding of and compliance with all Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards.

8. Offers recommendations for improving efficiency.

9. Reviews, revises and develops departmental policies and procedures on a regular basis.

10. Assures present employees meet institutional, professional and department competency standards.

11. Conducts scheduled staff meetings.

12. Recommends and introduces new programs for the department in accordance with established goals and objectives.

 

C. Educational/Professional Development

1. Participates in the development of other staff members.

2. Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements.

3. Identifies learning strengths and needs.

4. Utilizes learning resources.

5. Meets all educational requirements as set forth by New York State regulations.

6. Maintains and provides documentation of required continuing education.
