The Phlebotomist Patient Access works under the general supervision of the Pre -Analytical Services Manager and serves as an integral member of the Laboratory department. The Phlebotomist Patient Access demonstrates exemplary customer service skills and clearly understands their role as the "face of the laboratory and Holland Hospital." The Phlebotomist Patient Access accurately performs patient registration including the gathering and input of payer information and use of verification software. The Phlebotomist Patient Access is responsible for placing laboratory orders into the hospital information system, the collection and submission of samples, and facilitating the flow of specimens and specimen requirement information following appropriate departmental and hospital procedures.Job Type: Part-time, days (58 hours every two weeks

Education Requirements:
-High school diploma/GED, or higher education
- Valid State of Michigan drivers license
- BLS/CPR through the American Heart Association
SAMPLE COLLECTION AND INTEGRITY
- Utilizing standard venipuncture techniques, appropriate blood specimens are collected and integrity maintained by correct collection protocol.
- Performs specialized blood collection tests such as blood cultures, adhering to defined protocol with no deviations.
- Adheres to strict standards when labeling blood specimens/non-blood specimens and provides the required information as well as ensuring adequate patient identification with each patient encounter.
- Follows all defined policies and procedures for universal blood and body fluid precautions and Infection Control practices.
- Maintains appropriate professionalism at all times explaining blood collection to patients while ensuring patient rights, safety, privacy, confidentiality and "customer relations" philosophy.
- Performs Urine Drug Screen and COC collection, Blood Alcohol, and H. Pylori Breath test collection according to defined protocol as necessary.
PATIENT REGISTRATION
- Interviews outpatients for visits to obtain complete and accurate demographic data, accesses various software systems to determine correct payor information and enters the data into the patient's medical record using various hospital information systems.
- Verifies that the correct physician, diagnosis and procedures are entered.
- Obtains appropriate consents for treatment compliantly.
- Enters orders in the information system for tests per the physician's order or lab requisition.
- Answers patient and family questions regarding tests and finance or directs them appropriately.
- Obtains Advanced Beneficiary Notification (ABN) signatures as appropriate.
- Completes Authorization to Release Medical Information forms compliantly to request or send results to patients or other hospital entities.
WORKFLOW AND ASSIGNED DUTIES
- Manages patient workload with a balance of registration and sample collection activities.
- Demonstrates competence with applicable information systems.
- Processes specimens ensuring proper identification and monitoring specimen integrity for testing.
- This includes specimen sorting, computer receipt/changing orders, centrifugation, and specimen aliquoting.
- Responsible for delivery of identified specimens to laboratory in a timely manner to ensure accurate reporting and turn around times.
- Transports specimen between facilities as assigned.
- Responsible for maintaining phlebotomy workstations and phlebotomy supply inventory.
- Performs off-site phlebotomy as assigned.
QUALITY AND EDUCATION
- Attends Phlebotomy staff meetings or reads and acknowledges meeting minutes.
- Maintains registration competence by completing applicable Patient Access training.
- Demonstrates current knowledge of the organizational occurrence reporting process and expectations.
- Identifies opportunities to participate with quality improvement initiatives/teams.
- Maintains CAP regulations and guidelines in all phlebotomy practices.
