Job Duties

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking a Director of Driver Training. The Director of the Driver Training Division leads the division's programs, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws regarding driver training schools and third-party testers. This role provides strategic leadership to all work centers and teams within the division, overseeing staff management, legislative and program initiatives, and operational performance. The Director is responsible for the licensing, training, auditing, and sanctioning of driver training schools, maintaining high standards for road safety and driver education throughout the state.

The Driver Training Division ensures that all driver licensing and monitoring activities meet federal and state program requirements, safeguarding public safety by providing accurate and timely services. This division ensures compliance with federal regulations and the laws of the Commonwealth while licensing and overseeing driver training schools and third-party testers.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, serves approximately 6.2 million licensed drivers and ID card holders with over 8.4 million registered vehicles. Minimum Qualifications

•Considerable experience directing a large-scale program or business unit, including full accountability for performance outcomes and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, or industry standards
•Considerable senior leadership experience managing multi-functional teams, including hiring, performance management, and staff development
•Demonstrated experience interpreting and implementing changes in law, regulation, or industry standards, including translating new requirements into operational procedures
•Demonstrated experience overseeing audit or quality-compliance functions, including managing both internal compliance reviews and external/third-party audits, and directing corrective action plans
•Demonstrated experience serving as a primary liaison to external regulatory bodies, business partners, or other outside organizations, including representing an organization's position in meetings or public forums

Additional Considerations

•Experience specifically with driver training, driver licensing, CDL programs, or third-party testing oversight
•Experience working directly with FMCSA, state boards of education, or similar driver-training regulatory bodies
•Considerable senior leadership experience in a director-level role overseeing a regulated program or licensing function
