About the Role

The Senior Engineer – Ventilation, is responsible for short term ventilation planning and implementation including monitoring and rectification allowing for the mine to safely execute the mine plan. Reporting to the Mining Engineering Superintendent, the position leads the operational ventilation team of Engineers, Specialists and Technicians.

Location: Carrapateena, South Australia (60-minute flight from Adelaide / 30-minute flight from Port Augusta)

Employment Type: Permanent full time

In this role you will:

  • Oversee the regular inspection, monitoring and testing of underground workplaces to ensure adequate ventilation flows and atmospheric contaminants are as low as can be reasonably achieved inclusive of radiation
  • Control and monitor all underground ventilation systems to ensure ventilation standards and regulations are met and maintained.
  • Create and manage operational Ventilation TARPs
  • Conduct and plan underground environmental hygiene checks as required and documented by Occupational Health & Safety standards
  • Plan, direct and document air quality surveys for temperature, gas, radon, dust, air flows, and other contaminants.
  • Develop, maintain, coordinate and issue ventilation, egress, and firing plans.
  • Engage with ventilation SME as required during underground emergency situations.
  • Input and manage Ventilation Management Plans, Site Radiation Management Plan with the Occupational Health & Safety team
  • Control the underground ventilation system in line with budgeted physical targets in a safe and sustainable manner.
  • Implement corrective action plans in consultation with Planning Engineers and Contractors.
  • Underground and surface ventilation monitoring, equipment maintenance and systems to meet BHP standard and statutory requirements.
  • Plan, undertake and document UG Secondary and Primary Surveys and required reporting
  • Manage the contractors undertaking the ventilation works so they meet safety, cost and improvement targets.
  • Ventilation Planning up to the 13 Week / Monthly level including 13-Week, Weekly and Shift Plans. This is to be done by taking inputs from the Medium & Long Term Ventilation Plans produced by the respective teams.
  • Creating, issuing and validating Ventilation Plans required to execute the Ventilation Schedule or rectify conditions to ensure the mine plan can be achieved safely
  • The role is responsible for leading a team of 7+ roles from technicians to engineers including professional & personal development, coverage management & administrative requirements.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering or equivalent (Mechanical etc)
  • Previous experience in Underground Mining, SLC exposure regarded.
  • Sound experience in Underground Hard Rock Ventilation with additional Radiation exposure regarded
  • Demonstrated delivery of pragmatic ventilation solutions to support development and production mine plans
  • A proven commitment to safety
  • Experience in leadership positions managing teams
  • Pragmatic problem solver with an ability to apply and communicate logic
  • Ability to interact successfully with multiple internal stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Advanced user of VentSim
  • Experience in Deswik or other CAD packages
