Moffatt & Nichol is actively looking for a Transportation Engineering Intern with to join our Costa Mesa office. Interns will provide support to design engineers by being involved in engineering and administration of projects, as well as assisting in obtaining and reviewing information for marine, waterfront and bridge (depending on office location) design and analysis.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the design, planning, and computations in accordance with local DOT and AASHTO publications
  • Develop detailed roadway 3D models to be used for design and construction using Bentley InRoads or OpenRoads
  • Perform design calculations and prepare design drafts 
  • Study, evaluate, and document design criteria; researche applicable codes, and present findings to project team for implementation
  • Design and preparation of documents for:
    • Freeway Improvement, Widening, and interchange Projects
    • Minor and major roadway improvements and grade separations
    • Pedestrian and bike facilities meeting ADA requirements
    • Stage Construction and Traffic Handling
  • Calculate quantities of elements for construction of projects and prepare cost estimates
  • Visit project sites if required
  • Assist with similar duties in other engineering disciplines  assigned by Project Managers
  • Perform preliminary and detailed engineering study and design tasks for water resources and related civil engineering projects including:
    • Stormwater hydrology, hydraulics and management
    • Watershed assessment & planning
    • Urban flood risk and floodplain management
    • Flood protection and resilience design
    • Low impact development/green infrastructure
    • Stormwater and drainage infrastructure design and permitting, preferably locally.
    • Stream and creek improvement and restoration
  • Performs numerical modeling studies in support of stormwater, drainage and creek/stream improvement projects 
  • Prepares design plans, specifications, and cost estimates, in support of final bid packages

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering with highway or transportation emphasis
  • Must be at least a Junior in their Bachelor’s program 
  • Possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Experience preparing drawings/detailing plans using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD  through drafting classes or other CAD experience
  • At least one previous related internship preferred but not required
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
