Software Engineering Manager, DevOps

About the role

IXL Learning, a leading edtech company with products used by 14 million students worldwide, is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to manage a team of talented DevOps engineers and provide hands-on technical and project leadership.

This is a full time position with a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in the office/2 days WFH at our Raleigh, NC office.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Manage a high-performing team of DevOps engineers and help with recruitment for the team.
  • Work with your team to master a variety of production technology stacks, ensuring appropriate knowledge coverage 
  • Take responsibility for site performance, uptime and scalability 
  • Develop and maintain accurate monitoring dashboards, alerting and runbook documentation
  • Manage on-call rotations
  • Partner with application engineering teams to understand product needs, support test environments, and manage CI/CD pipelines
  • Propose architecture changes that will allow us to consolidate, simplify, and streamline our technology, company-wide
  • Guide and mentor engineers to ensure a high level of work satisfaction, technical advancement, and progress towards individual career goals
  • Make company initiatives, mission, goals, and values clear to each team member

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science or a related discipline
  • 7+ years of professional hands-on software engineering or DevOps experience
  • 2+ years of experience leading a software engineering or DevOps team
  • 2+ years of experience managing and troubleshooting online multi-user SaaS systems
  • Fluency in DevOps concerns such as source control, builds, deployments, networking, scaling, and monitoring
  • Flexibility to work with a variety of technologies and legacy systems, balanced against a passion to streamline and modernize
  • Skill at troubleshooting problems across the stack, providing both immediate fixes as well as long term solutions
  • Experience running services in cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
  • Experience with common service technologies like web servers, message queues, load balancers, and databases
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes is a plus
  • Flexibility about work hours and being on call
  • Strong communication, leadership, and time management skills
