The Urology Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care to patients with urological disorders under the supervision of a urologist or independently within the scope of their licensure. This role involves assessing, diagnosing, and managing acute and chronic urological conditions, collaborating with healthcare teams, and educating patients on treatment plans and preventive care. The NP delivers patient-centered care in outpatient clinics, hospitals, or surgical settings, ensuring high-quality outcomes for patients with conditions such as but not inclusive of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, prostate issues, bladder disorders, female voiding dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse and urologic cancers.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment and Diagnosis:
- Perform comprehensive physical exams, focusing on urological health.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as urinalysis, ultrasounds, cystoscopies, or urodynamic studies.
- Diagnose urological conditions, for example, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), erectile dysfunction, incontinence, kidney stones, pelvic pain, voiding dysfunction and urologic cancers.

Treatment and Management:
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for urological conditions.
- Prescribe medications, therapies, or interventions within the scope of practice.
- Perform or assist in minor urological procedures, such as catheter insertions, bladder irrigations, or prostate biopsies, based on individual proficiency. .
- Manage post-operative care for patients undergoing major and minor urologic surgeries. .

Patient Education and Counseling:
- Educate patients and families on urological conditions, treatment options, and lifestyle modifications to promote health and prevent complications.
- Provide counseling on topics like incontinence management, sexual health, or prostate cancer screening.

Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work closely with urologists, surgeons, oncologists, and other healthcare providers to coordinate multidisciplinary care.
- Refer patients to specialists when necessary and ensure seamless care transitions.
- Participate in case reviews and contribute to treatment planning discussions.
- Participate in the urologic education of primary care physicians in our network.

Documentation and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and facility regulations, including HIPAA and scope-of-practice guidelines.

Research and Quality Improvement:
- Stay updated on advancements in urology care and integrate evidence-based practices into patient care.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and clinic efficiency.

Qualifications

Education:
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
- Completion of a Nurse Practitioner program with a focus on urology, surgery, adult-gerontology, family practice, or a related specialty.

Licensure and Certification:
- Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the state of practice.
- National certification as a Nurse Practitioner (e.g., AANP or ANCC).
- Specialty certification in urology (e.g., Certified Urologic Nurse Practitioner, CUNP) preferred or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe.

Experience:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner, preferably in urology, internal medicine, or a related field.
- Prior nursing experience in urology, surgical care, or oncology is a plus.

Skills and Abilities:
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills specific to urological conditions.
- Proficiency in performing or assisting with urologic procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient education and team collaboration.
- Ability to work independently and make sound clinical decisions within the NP scope of practice.
- Familiarity with EHR systems and medical documentation standards.
- Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care.
