About This Role:
Windstream’s IP Network team continues to drive innovation in IP and MPLS networks and products. We are seeking a Principal Network Architect to lead advancements in Core-to-Edge routing, switching technology, and intelligent data services within the IP and MPLS domains. The ideal candidate will have over 8 years of experience in IP network engineering, including developing, testing, and deploying new routing and switching technologies, as well as expertise in automation for core and edge networks. This role focuses on modernizing existing networks while maintaining cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead Windstream’s IP network architecture and evolution, incorporating next-generation technologies for routing, switching, and cost efficiency.
• Evaluate and select new technologies and systems, leveraging expertise in routing, switching, IP over DWDM integration, and network automation.
• Apply knowledge in ISIS, BGP, SR-MPLS, LDP, IP planning tools, network virtualization, and security.
• Work with Cisco, Juniper, Nokia, and Ciena routing products across various silicon, operating systems, and fabric generations.
• Advance disaggregated routing solutions using merchant silicon, network OS, and VNF integrations.
• Design and implement L2 and L3 service models, ensuring QoS, SLA, OAM, and SAT standards.
• Conduct RFx analysis, lead proof-of-concept tests, and oversee field trials.
• Collaborate with partners to integrate hardware and software for network deployment.
• Develop and refine IP testbeds, enhance testing procedures, and automate test cases.
• Document platform, product, and service configurations, supporting automation initiatives.
Location & Travel
This is a remote/WFH-compatible position requiring periodic travel to supplier sites, conferences, and Windstream’s network lab in Little Rock, AR.
Qualifications
• Deep understanding of the Internet Service Provider industry and IP Network Engineering.
• Extensive knowledge of IP routing, MPLS switching, Ethernet, IP over DWDM, network management, and test equipment.
• Strong understanding of network security (DDoS mitigation, ACLs, firewalls).
• Ensure network redundancy, disaster recovery, and high availability to meet stringent SLA requirements.
• Ability to create cost models for data services, network projects, and technology platforms.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, planning tools, databases, network OS, and EMS applications.
Soft Skills
• Analytical mindset with a focus on optimizing network performance, capacity, and cost efficiency.
• Strong communication skills to coordinate with vendors, customers, and internal teams.
• Ability to lead complex projects under tight deadlines.
Education & Experience:
• College degree in Engineering or a related field and 8+ years professional level experience; or 12+ years professional level related Engineering/Technical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related Engineering/Technical experience required.
Desired Qualifications:
• Proven ability to stay ahead of industry advancements and evolving data networking technologies.
The starting compensation range for this job is $105,600 to 141,300.
