Position Summary:
 

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs duties related to the circulation of library materials. Organizes the daily operations of an area. Organizes, distributes, and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Resolves problems. Provides information concerning library policies and resources. Processes library materials and interlibrary loan requests. Maintains equipment and supplies in area of responsibility.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Processes loans, returns, renewals, and holds of library materials according to the daily schedule. Issues borrowing cards.

  • Organizes daily operation of an area. Organizes, distributes, and verifies the work of others and participates in their training.

  • Resolves problems at the service location assigned in the daily schedule.

  • Receives payments and issues receipts for McGill Library users.

  • Ensures printing and mailing of overdue notices to the users. Conducts recalls of borrowed materials.

  • Receives interlibrary loan requests. Verifies availability and location of items. Retrieves and prepares items for loan or forwards requests to appropriate institutions.

  • Scans library materials as assigned.

  • Prepares, verifies, and follows up on lists and invoices concerning interlibrary loans, overdue items, and outstanding fines.

  • Retrieves, processes, and arranges reserve materials.

  • Works on collection maintenance and relocation projects (e.g. preparing items to be moved to off-site storage).

  • Conducts inventory, shelf reading, and collection-shifting projects as required. Performs searches for library materials.

  • Locates, collects, sorts and shelves library materials.

  • Provides basic reference service, such as demonstrating the routine use of the public catalogue and other finding aids.

  • Assists users in locating library materials by performing simple title, author, subject, and keyword searches.

  • Performs duties related to the processing of library materials, such as receiving and verifying library materials and affixing barcodes and security strips.

  • Verifies, updates, and maintains records and files related to activities of the unit.

  • Compiles statistics related to the provided services.

  • Participates in the development of the area’s procedures and work methods.

  • Opens and closes the work area according to the daily schedule.

  • Uses office equipment such as computer, scanner, calculator, photocopier, and fax machine

  • Provides information concerning general library policies, procedures, and the location of library resources.

  • Ensures users’ compliance with health and safety regulations.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

DEC in Information and Library Technologies or Bachelors degree (desired).

Experience working in a client service focused environment with a proven ability to deal with people at all levels. Organizational, customer service and teamwork skills, problem solving ability, proven ability to work with automated systems, and a general understanding of a library environment. Physical requirements include moving and lifting weights of up to 20 kgs., handling dusty and other various types of library materials, shelving and shifting books, bending, walking (includes walking between buildings), working while standing. Demonstrated ability to work in a computerized environment. English, spoken and written. French, spoken. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at level #(3) on a scale of 1-4.
