Intern Data Scientist - Genotype-by-Environment Interaction
As a Data Science Intern – Genotype-by-Environment Interaction, you will investigate quantitative genetics approaches (primarily linear mixed models) that predict which lines are suitable for range of environments versus lines that perform best in specific environments.
Period: 6 months (starting 2024)
Genotype-by-environment (GxE) interactions are genetic components of plant performance that are only expressed in certain environments. Such GxE effects are common in vegetable crops, especially in open field markets.
You will be part of a global, diverse and dynamic team of scientists and specialists that work in vegetable breeding across several continents.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role, (Intern Data Scientist – Genotype-by-Environment Interaction), are to:
- Support work in the predictive breeding team to model GxE interactions.
- Literature review on GxE modeling.
- Phenotype and genotype data processing and analysis.
- Incorporating GxE into genomic prediction approaches.
- Provide recommendations on best GxE methods.
- Contribute to a digital analysis workflow.
- Interact with stakeholders seeking feedback on the workflow for further improvement.
- Communicate your results to stakeholders.
WHO YOU ARE
Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our life values, more specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
- Currently enrolled in a BSc or MSc program in data or biological sciences, breeding, quantitative genetics, statistics, or similar.
- Experience in coding (R, Python, or similar) and scientific computing.
- Knowledge of predictive statistics (required) and genomic prediction (desirable).
- Able to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and communicate clearly.
- Fluent in English (written and oral).
