Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a professional-level position in Environmental Health (EH). This is a field position responsible for conducting regulatory inspections in Environmental Health programs, including those requiring a Certified Environmental Health Professional license. The duties of this position require the incumbent to be able to be relied upon to work independently and manage their time to meet deadlines and use standard field equipment. This position is responsible for performing inspections, complaint investigations, and other tasks in accordance with Florida Statutes (FS), Administrative Code (FAC), and Department of Health policies in the Facilities, Water and the Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Service (OSTDS) programs. The position will report to the OSTDS Environmental Supervisor. This is a full-time position working 40 hours weekly.
- Conducts field inspections in the OSTDS program, ensuring compliance with environmental health rules and regulations as outlined in Chapter 62-6, F.A.C. and Florida Statute 381. These inspections will occur as called in for OSTDS construction and repair permits, as well as annual service and operating permits.
- Responds to public health nuisance complaints, initiating investigation and inspection procedures within EH policy timeframes. Initiates investigations within two (2) working days after receipt or as coordinated with partnering agencies/divisions and collects and documents relevant data.
- Assists with enforcement actions of nuisance complaints, gathers evidence, and participate in informal and formal hearings, and other legal actions to secure compliance with environmental health rules and regulations.
- Maintains record of all inspections and site visits performed by entering them into the Environmental Health Database and by submitting all completed inspection reports to the supervisor by the following workday. Enters hours worked and services performed into Health Management System (HMS) within seven days (7) of completion in accordance with DHP50-21 (FDOH EH Coding Pamphlet). Maintains records and files associated with assigned facilities, including, but not limited to, inspections, reports, and correspondence.
- Performs other related duties as required, including but not limited to, retrieving stored hardcopies from our off-site storage facility, transporting plans or other documents to local agencies, including but not limited to mailing, billing, and filing. Assists in file maintenance and works in conjunction with other inspectors to ensure inspection requirements are met.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Florida Administrative Codes and Florida Statutes related to the duties of the position.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and customers.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize workload to meet deadlines and to ensure completion of inspections as required.
- Skill in the use of computers including applications such as Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and the Environmental Health Database or comparable databases.
- Ability to effectively perform field inspections, to document findings, write reports.
- Ability to prepare and present information to customers, the general public and community partners

- A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
- A bachelor’s degree from an U.S. accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in a related science field (Environmental Health, Environmental Science or a Physical or Biological Science).
