About the role

Responsible for:

✔ The Instructor, Adventures in Nature (AIN) is responsible for teaching participants in the Adventures

in Nature program using a pre-developed curriculum. Specific responsibilities include working

closely with AIN counselors on activities development and facilitation, planning and presenting

programs and helping to create an engaging, creative and educational camp experience.


PRIMARY DUTIES


1. Teaches participants in the Adventures in Nature (AIN) program using a pre-developed curriculum.

Works closely with AIN counselors on activity development and facilitation, planning and presenting

programs and helping to create an engaging, creative and educational camp experience.

2. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Manager, Public Programs dependent on

organizational needs.


ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITY


The incumbent is in a non-confined office-type setting in which he or she is free to move about at will. The

environment for this position is mostly clean and comfortable but may include some minor annoyances such

as noise, odors, drafts, etc.

In the course of performing this work, the incumbent:

▪ Will spend substantial time standing/walking--in a classroom setting, moving throughout the

museum, and outdoors

▪ Must be able to climb stairs and walk two miles over uneven terrain.

▪ May lift up to 50 lbs. periodically.

▪ Will operate a laptop computer using the various Google suite and Microsoft Office programs


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

to the satisfactory performance of this job. Individual abilities may result in some deviation from these

guidelines.

To perform effectively in this position, the incumbent is expected to have:

● A welcoming and personable attitude and the ability to interact effectively with children of all ages, their

families, staff and other Museum visitors.

● Experience working alongside staff with diverse backgrounds and serving diverse audiences.

● Must have reliable transportation in order to be punctual and dependable in the care of children Ability

to plan and lead games and activities for elementary- aged school children.

● Ability to relate to and communicate easily and effectively with children and adults.

● Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Ability to

communicate ideas verbally and in writing.

● Fluency in a second language, ideally Spanish and/or Korean, is preferred.

● Previous experience with summer camps or another informal learning environment with children and a

general interest in natural history is required.

● High school diploma and/or GED required. College/graduate degrees in education, liberal studies, child

development or museum studies preferred.

● In response to the pandemic, the AIN camp instructors will be responsible for adhering to COVID-19

Safety protocols established by the museum.
