The O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law was established in 2007 through the generous philanthropy of Linda and Timothy O’Neill to respond to the need for innovative solutions to the most pressing global health concerns. In bringing together experts from both the public health and legal fields, the O’Neill Institute reflects the importance of public and private law in health policy analysis.
The Senior Associate will work on projects and/or academic research projects and explore new policy areas, including preparation of white papers, organization of research colloquia, expert meetings, coordination of interdisciplinary research team, and grant writing. Academic projects involve working closely with faculty to produce scholarly works for publication. The incumbent communicates with partners, funders, other institutes, clinics, and professors as needed to obtain information relevant to research projects. Reporting to the Co-Directors of Health Policy and the Law, the Senior Associate has duties that include but are not limited to:
Identify issues and/or policy areas to explore, collecting and analyzing information and report findings to propose new ideas.
Oversee legal research, analysis, project organization, and external engagement on assigned topics with occasional support from, and supervision of, research assistants.
Coordinate with external partners, including donor organizations, and internal stakeholders of the Institute to accomplish project and program goals, involving legal and policy writing and presentations and participation in related conferences and events.
Support Institute fundraising efforts by assisting in the development of new and ongoing research projects and proposals, researching relevant large donors to facilitate new relationships for the Institute and increase funding opportunities.
Support O’Neill Institute courses including experiential components such as interacting with outside sponsors, participating in class exercises, and reviewing student work.
Attend and report on events relevant to the assigned research topics and/or other projects at the Institute as assigned by the Institute.
Network with internal and external stakeholders, representing the Institute’s projects and programs and the Senior Associate’s area of expertise, generating reports and providing data to the management team as needed.
Subject to Institute and project needs, occasionally travel to attend and/or present at relevant conferences, convenings, and events, both domestic and international.
Requirements and Qualifications
JD required
Five to seven years of health law and/or health policy experience, with some supervisory experience
Familiarity with both domestic and international health law topics
Academic and working knowledge of research topics related to health law
Excellent research and legal writing skills with the ability to operate professionally and maturely in interactions with academic and other stakeholders
Ability to work well as part of a small team and supervise student work in a professional manner
Exceptional academic credentials, including publications
