Purpose

Reporting to the Deputy to the President, The Special Assistant to the President will collaborate with the President, the Deputy, the Governmental Affairs and Initiatives staff, and other senior university leaders to develop and implement a coherent, proactive, and forward-thinking strategy for university local government relations in coordination with state and federal relations.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represents the Office of the President at external meetings.
  • Serves as an ambassador, representing university interests, on and off campus.
  • Advises the President and senior leadership on legislative issues.
  • Supports the Governmental Affairs and Initiatives division in state policy and budgetary issues and other K-12 initiatives in the division.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of governmental and legislative experience.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively, work well under pressure, and manage details of several concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player and work productively with others in a dynamic environment.
  • Capable of working independently.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain integrity and professionalism

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An extensive track record of public service in the state of Texas.
  • Experience working in higher education.

Salary Range

$150,000 + depending on qualifications
