Position Summary:
The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is a vital member of the surgical team who works under the supervision of a registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The CST ensures the operating room is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Consults with OR staff regarding surgical procedures, equipment needs, and physician preference cards. Communicates concerns or changes to the Circulating Nurse.

Works scheduled shifts, including rotating on-call and callback responsibilities. Must arrive within designated timeframe.

Prepares for surgical procedures by donning OR attire and PPE, performing a surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.

Actively participates in the Time Out process for every surgical case.

Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing physician preference cards and handling specialized surgical instruments.

Evaluates and resolves potential issues quickly and effectively, using sound judgment.

Sets up the Operating Room based on the scheduled procedure and surgeon requirements.

Participates in post-procedure cleanup, ensuring compliance with infection control policies and AORN standards.

Promotes a culture of safety by identifying and reporting potential hazards.

Assists the surgical team by anticipating surgeon needs (e.g., holding retractors, suctioning operative site, securing cords and tubing).

Coordinates camera operation and assists with robotic equipment as directed.

Inspects sterile packages and addresses any breaks in aseptic technique.

Maintains an organized, sterile instrument table and ensures equipment is in proper working condition.

Performs initial and ongoing counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps in collaboration with the circulator.

Handles specimens appropriately and ensures proper labeling and documentation.

Assists with gowning, gloving, draping, and establishing the sterile field.

Participates in department quality improvement, case debriefings, and continuous education.

Verifies operative procedures and supports accurate case preparation.

Selects appropriate instrumentation based on patient age and size.

Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate suture types per procedure and patient demographics.

Assists in safe patient positioning and movement, maintaining proper alignment and body mechanics.

Other duties as assigned to support the mission and vision of the hospital.
Additional Responsibilities:

Completes all required education, training, and competencies by deadlines.

Maintains punctual attendance and active participation in department meetings.

Promotes a culture of safety by reporting all incidents by end of business day.

Adheres to hospital policies, Code of Conduct, and all applicable regulations (OSHA, HIPAA, CMS, TJC).

Minimum Job Requirements:
Education & Certification:
-
Required: Read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
-
Required: Current CST certification or valid Texas LVN license.
-
Required: BLS certification (within 30 days of hire).

Preferred: Prior patient care experience in an acute care hospital.
-
Required: On call
